You should add your location to your profile .

I have used both Green lights and lanterns for crappies at night ...with great results . Not certain about VT though.

What specific lights are you referring to? I don't see a link...

We have used a hydroglow for smelt, and it definitely brings them in. I doubt they are worth the money though, as we seem to attract just as many with regular lights aimed down the hole. Heck, have even brought them in with a light on a cell phone!

you can get an inexpensive smaller version of a Hydroglow on amazon. I bought one and it works great.

I also have a short six inch long hydro-light that I bought on line last year. Seemed like it was about $25. Works great and I only use a spare flasher unit battery to run it for hours.

When I was a kid we had this sheet of plexiglass (or some kind of clear plastic- I don't remember) that we used to put over a hole that was in the middle of us and just stand a flashlight on it pointing down into the water. We caught smelt and walleyes all night long that way. I've done the same thing with an LED flashlight and had similar results.

You don't need to spend much to get the effect.
May the fish be with you.

That's a cool idea.  I wonder if the ice was clear enough and you had had a strong enough light, if you could just put it right on the ice and get a decent enough output.  Or maybe drill a partial hole kind of like you would for a flasher.

I would think that a light in a nice, clean partial hole wold work since the fish would be attracted to the glow.
May the fish be with you.

I recently bought a bright green GloToob (submersible LED) light on Amazon for like $20.  Haven't had a chance to try it out yet, maybe if we get some winter sometime soon I'll get to give it a go.

I got one of the Alumni-glo green led lights from cabelas and it seemed to make the smelt vanish. not sure if it was really due to the green light but i shut it off and went with a regular flashlight and ended up having a field day catching em.  Ive heard many pros & cons about them.

I remember it being illegal at one time (I think), but I think they realized that people were just keeping lanterns near the ice to work by and that it's really hard to tell the difference between a light sitting on the ice to attract fish and one sitting there so a fisherman can see to tie knots or unhook fish. It's still illegal to use a light to spot deer
May the fish be with you.

Bought a Hydro  vu last year and tried it for Smelt. A little slow at first but it worked very well. WE even  saw larger fish come busting through the schools of smelt. The smelt would disappear for a bit but always came back.
