North Hero Ice Conditions
« on: Feb 03, 2016, 09:44 AM »
Hello Vermont board,

I have a trip planned to fish lake Champlain off North Hero Feb 16-18th. Just checking to make sure I will be all set in terms of ice. Temps here are in the 50's today with rain so needless to say the ice wont be safe in central Mass unless we get another big freeze.

Thanks in advance I appreciate it!

Flag up oops it went back down.

No ice on the east or west shore and the bays like the gut, carry and dillenback are not looking too good. Better make some calls before coming up unless we get some real cold temps without wind.
Taught ice fishing for pan fish by one of the best...Art Rye may he RIP

I think you were up there last year around the same time. Gonna get cold up there again.

You may want to look at smaller ponds as a contingent.
Forecast here is above freezing until Fri.day and night.
After that nights will be in the tweens days around freezing.
If that keeps up you might be OK.come up anyway
And hit the bars.lots of great microbrews here in vt

Well who ever Bruce is he's lying to you... I heard of three people taking a swim near St. Albans bay on Sunday afternoon, and it's been warm and rainy. I'd read the ice conditions thread about how this weather weakens ice, and how even though you might have 4-5 inches of ice its integrity has been compromised by windy rain and warm temps. If you do go out make sure you wear your floaties and a good wet suit might help you.
My passion for fishing and hunting, I owe to my Father and Uncle Art. RIP Art Rye, I will cherish all the days on the hard water we spent together and all the days in the woods. Miss you...

I was at Holiday Harbor this past weekend.  We had about a foot of ice.  Not sure how much will be left after this week though.

A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work!!

Bruce is a good guy.  I always get my bait from him when I'm up that way.  He does like to sleep in though.  He's always got good reliable info.

Wasn't saying he isn't a good guy...sure he is but thinking there will be much safe ice anywhere soon is unlikely...especially since we are coming up on mid feb. generally after Feb. 15th the sun is starting to get a high angle in the sky and it will start actually melting ice from the bottom up on shallow reefs...the only place we have ice this year. Just be careful is all I'm saying no fish is worth your life.

I drove down through the islands toady. I didn't get out and check ice but there are people fishing Dillenbeck, in front of Holiday Harbor, Carry Bay, the gut and the south side of the sandbar. And, Bruce wasn't lying!!!! Please be careful who you call a liar on here!

I drove down thru the islands yesterday..checked out tabor pt
Dillenbec  ,gut, karrey and sandbar.
Only place I did not see fishermen was karry bay.
Needless to say the ice is always a risk.but it
Is there. Be safe.leave your vehicle(ATV) on shore..A fellow told me a
4 wheeler went through around the left point at dillenbeck
The other day.they were able to get the guy out.
His ATV is now structure. :-\

I live up here the ice is sketchy.  Just rained, the weather has been in the 40's,  a guy went thru the ice on his wheeler on the dillenbeck a few days ago and broke his nose.  The Alburgh passage where Holiday harbour is has a current.  I would be very cautious heading out on the ice there.

Got almost 2 weeks before I head up that way and the long range is looking pretty good. A lot of cold days and nights. Keep the snow away and it should be pretty good again. .

You guys think dillenbeck is safe to walk out on?  Fished 200' off shore last weekend with 8-9 inches of ice.  Lots of previous holes drilled everywhere though, I'm thinking they all opened up pretty good.  Theres wasn't good clear ice for about 100' from shore either though.

I actually had to throw some salt out on my drive 2day.
But I live at the top of the drainage.(mountains).,
With all the snow melt the rivers are filling up
And dumping down into the lake
I think it will be a week or so b4 I am back
On the ice.2bad I just bought a marcum camera.
Really want to play with it.
