it's over
« on: Feb 01, 2016, 05:31 PM »
Trust me I don't wanna b the bad news guy but I'm guessing it's all but over n probly not coming back which sucks! I just got my vexilar at the end of last year and haven't got 2 use it but 10 or 15 times. But with the rain n warm weather I'm afraid we won't get safe ice again! What's your thoughts? Please tell me I'm probably wrong

I still have hope to get back out.  I checked a local lake today and was surprised to see it still locked-up.  The first 5 to 10 feet along the shore was open or thin.   I walked out to the end of a 20 foot long dock and there was 3 inches of what looked like good hard black ice.

Checked out red bridge area yesterday(WEDs) evening. Resi is still locked up except a few feet from shore for the most part. Knowing the resi's as I do I would say you'll be able to get back on possible the weekend after next. Won't be like before but atleast that shore ice will be gone. As always tread with caution. Water color did not change and level is at or near winter pool. If the temps that are predicted for next week and beyond hold true the best ice fishing of the year may still be coming. Water level is finally at a stable level and clarity is just right and the discharge from dam is being lessened nearly each day. I'll be checking again mid next week.

these guys are on a moving water and have hope of getting backk on.  most of us dont have to worry about that in most lakes and we seem worried.  lol

really though you guys can have that running water ice.  never liked it when i fished down there.  i think i would like it even less these days. lol

you reservoir guys have any safety tips that pertaining to moving water ice, for us all?

River scum I know its moving water but when there hardly pulling any water I don't think it's any different than fishing a lake..... Just use common sense as with fishing anywhere and you'll b fine just my opinion....... I've been fishing them since I was a kid and don't see much difference from a lake. .... Other than they don't bite well when there pulling water.

I have fished the resi's quite a bit, and haven't found them to be too much different then a lake.  You always hear the story about a guy that drilled a hole and the water was 2' below his hole.  I'm not sure I believe that one, but have heard it plenty of times.

Been fishing the resi for atleast 50 yrs and to my knowledge only one person has ever drowned ice fishing any of the three upper resi's. That was back in the mid 70's. As far as the current is concerned under normal conditions you rarely notice any current but yes it's there in the main channels where there is very few that even fish. From my many years of ice fishing all over northern Indiana the resi's are always the first to freeze up and get fishable ice. I can't explain way this is but just know from experience. I guess you all have heard the stories of ice hanging way above water and guys breaking thru and walking under ice looking for a spot to get out. That always makes me chuckle. I have see a separation of to water on the slopes near shore but never over the actual water future than a few feet from shore. I would say by the number of people that fish the resi's every year they are atleast as safe as any body of water that you natural lake people fish and likely safer because either the conditions are right or they are not and we just don't try to push it.
