Pros and Cons on sleds bought vs homemade
« on: Jan 23, 2016, 03:29 PM »
Greetings all,

Looking for some insight on the pros and cons on buying a sled and modifying it or constructing one. I have seen some really neat homemade sleds using an old pair of skis as a base and using I believe it was a 2 x 6 riser's with 2 x 4 cross beams and then the "box" either made of wood or the plastic sled you can buy sitting on top of the risers. I am excited about the opportunity to create such a sled and have seen them with pvc pipe and all other kinds of materials. I would be very interested to hear anyone that has a thought pro / con on which is the best way to go.

Thank you in advance.

Buy the sled and put the ski's on it. Works very well from my own experience.

Ski's make them glide on the snow/ice. Sleds are better then nothing but they have a ton of drag unless you spend some money adding runners and such and even then the ski's are going to win. Smitty Sled is the best thing i've created for ice fishing. :)

Yes Smitty all the way ...I have 3 . Now as for sleds ...homemade tend to be heavy ...lot of good choices out there by manufacturers ..Otter toughest of them all ..hardest to pull...Shappell  Jet sled...lightest and easiest to pull ..then some off makes and models fall in between . I have an Otter Med sled and a Jet sled 1 ...Viking makes a model similar in size/weight and construction of the Jet sled ...Other IS members have used concrete mixing tubs atop a Smitty .

Just do what I do and hook it up to the back of your atv

No worries pulling through snow or slush :)
