wax or maggot

What does everyone prefer?

I have always had great luck with Wax worms and I have friends that fish with maggots only.

I always have waxies with me. I sometimes have spikes. I usually start the year with a couple hundred oakies too.

I carry both, but I prefer the maggots.  Even in cold water they seem a bit more wiggly than waxworms.  1 single spike on a 3mm fiska works really well for me.

Like wax worms in warmer weather and spikes during ice because they seem to tolerate colder temps better. I like mousies over both though they are just hard to find and more pricey.

Spikes.

I'm still trying to get my wife to put on one the hook once she finds out what they are!

I find wax worms harder to keep healthy and easier to steal.maggots are my main panfish weapon now.although I also have been doing better each year on plastic

This post had me curious, so I ran my numbers for last years ice season.  Roughly 12/1/14 to 4/1/15.

Bait sales ranked by quantity
1-waxworms
2-fatheads
3-medium shiners
4-spikes (maggots)
5-Mealworms
6-Mousees
7-Oak Leaf grubs
8-Rosey Red Minnows
9-Suckers
10-Butterworms (limited availability in winter)
11-Nightcrawlers
12-Colored (red) Maggots

Based on our sales, Waxworms were almost a 10 to 1 favorite to maggots.

I know that when I walk into a bait shop I ask for waxies cuz I know there's a better chance of them having some. I never ask for spikes cuz most don't. Maybe if a shop advertised the spikes like puttin up a sign by the bait that listed bait types available I wonder if spike sales would go up? Just wondering.

I prefer a small jig head 1/16 with a small fathead hooks around the head area (so it stands vertical), killer for crappies, bass, and perch. When going for bluegills I use wax seem to do well. But if going for trout got to pick maggots they are just trout magnets.

Yeah maybe I should have gotten some waxies. But I swore I wouldn't last year after I switched to plastics. I bought them last year and only used them for trout.

Waxworms are nice but I prefer maggots. Maggots seem to stay longer in the fridge at the end of a fishing trip.

I just stop at our local Bait and Tackle to get some wax worms for Wednesday and they didn't have any. Said they would not get any in till Wednesday or Thursday if at all. Said they might not ship them due to the cold weather. :(
