2016 Loughborough Laker watch
« on: Jan 05, 2016, 07:44 AM »
Better late than never...
Open water last night, this morning we have a skim of ice over the laker grounds, super thin must have just formed hours ago because you can still see the heat coming out of the water. The slightest wind or warm weather will knock it out but at least its at the point where a few cold nights in a row will lock it up.  This weekend doesnt look good but maybe mid Jan??

There is ice in the shallows and a bit along the shore but stil open water at the western launch as of this morning, I would say this weekend is out of the question but next week looks good.

some ice formed last night out to about the 40 fow range but the deeper stuff is still open.  Another couple cold nights we might be in business.

Yup. It was like Christmas morning. I ran to the window to check the temp. And there it was, a nice skim of ice out there. Won't be long now!!!

For those of us that have to drive a bit to get to the lake, thanks again for posting these updates! This helps me out so much. Anybody know if Verona or Second Depot are frozen yet?

I need a volunteer to run out on the ice to about the 90 ft level on Thursday am,  when you get there jump up and down a couple of times ...just to check ... It would be really appreciated if you could report later.... if your not too wet,

thanking you (The Volunteer) in advance

I think the 40-60 fow range will have walkable ice by Sunday BUT It needs to set up strong before Saturday because there is a big wind forecast on Saturday from the NE which is the worst direction possible when there is still open water. Keep your fingers crossed, i will post an update pic Tmo

The deep stuff has iced up now too but just a thin layer, still a little patch of open water by where the creek runs in that a group of seagulls and ducks are desperately trying to keep open.  Further east I beleive its still open water but the majority of the laker grounds you would cover by foot from the west end launch has ice.  No way I would go anywhere near that deeper yet but i might go out and do some test holes in the shallower stuff tmo.

I was out on Rock this morning.  Between 2-4" of ice, about 3/4 of it black ice rest is crap, water came up over top so I was fishing in a bit of a soup. I spudded myself out to 60fow, would not dare go further (this was only about 30 yards out from the point).

Iam going out in the am to do some test holes and if I can get out to 30-40fow maybe drop a line. I drove by today and the ice is still perfectly clear, should be super strong just a matter if there is enough of it or not. I will post a report after. Anyone else plan on giving it a shot?

I went out about 150ft from the launch punching holes every 40 ft or so ice went from 5 to 4 to 3.5 inches problem is that is still only 5 fow. I could see where I wanted to go but you could tell that ice was only a few days old so wasn't going to risk it. Who knows, that 3.5-4 inches may continue out past the drop off and deeper but Iam not going to chance it on a solo trip. -14 right now, another 24hrs it might pack on another inch.
You can see in the pic the 5 holes I punched and beyond that where there is a bit of a ridge of newer ice.

Upon further reflection and review of my navionics I think I could have stayed to the right of the new ice and still make it to 40fow. Should have had the navionics going while I was walking. Oh well maybe Tmo. If anyone makes it out there today post an ice and hopefully fish report.

Some guys out there now, they did 2 things smarter than I. 1) they stayed to the right of the new ice and 2) they brought their huts because the wind chill is nasty!

Got out to loughborough this morning around 0700. Starting spudding out to the laker grounds slowly to the right of the boat launch on the ice that has been there longer and before i knew it i was out to 50 fow on 4.5-5" of good black ice. Setup and fished for about an hour and had a little bit of action on the flasher with one laker chasing nearly 15 ft before going back down to botttom. Action stopped so i decided to try to spud out to deeper water on the newly formed ice. Getting onto the new ice crossing the weak white ice was a slow task but once i started spudding on the newly formed black ice over the deep stuff i found 3-3.5" of perfect black ice. I made my way out to 67.5 fow and fished for a couple hours with a little bit of action on the flasher but no takers. If anyone decides to go out to the deep stuff be very careful when going over that transition between the old ice and the 3 day old stuff because i had to search to find a solid spot to cross over that wasnt weak.  Was fun to see trout in the depths again. Good luck to all this hardwater season. I was hoping to post the first pic of a 2016 lobo laker but i think one of you guys will beat me to it now.

I was out for a bit today too stayed  in the 40-50 range for a couple hrs didn't mark anything. Hope for a bit of snow cover I could see my bait on the bottom in 41fow so Iam sure the fish could see me as well. Fun to get out there tho. Ice was perfect, 5" if black in the 40-50ft range.
