Smelt
« on: Dec 31, 2015, 02:08 PM »
Hello,

I typically flour and pan fry my smelt in butter.  This is most likely the best option available but variety is also the spice of life.   Does any one have any great alternative ideas for smelt other then pan frying or the recipe bellow:
 1. put smelt on hook
 2. lower in lake
 3. wait for a flag
 4. Land a nice trout
 5. fillet the trout
 6. fry the trout and life is good

Yes, I freeze them and use them for trolling for trout.

Beer battered and deep fried with spicy cocktail horseradish sauce.  Or drive to Leelanau Michigan and get them at the Bluebird.

Dip them in some Italian dressing &  grill them for a minute or 2. Smoked smelt are also good. Brine them for 4 hrs. & smoke them for an hr. or so.

Pond smelt fishing is general iced fishing most in Japan.
We usually eat Japanese for tempura or a food fried without coat.
A dish of pickled vegetables with red pepper called 'nanbanzuke' is very good

I prefer to work hard for the reward, but Wal-Mart sells them around here .

I mostly use them for pike bait now.  When I was a kid, we always deep fried them pretty much on the crunchy side.  Eat them bones and all. As I remember they were excellent.
