My best smallie ever
« on: Dec 25, 2015, 11:03 AM »
Caught this smallmouth yesterday.  It is my first through the ice, which was one of my goals this year.  It is also the biggest I've ever caught.  I like catching them on the fly rod during the spring/summer, but on the little medium light Fenwick Elite Ice rod yesterday, it felt like a whale!!  It was 14", and had the widest belly I've ever seen on a fish that size.

Sure was fun!!

Do the have that same brown coloration in the summer?  I haven't seen a smallie look so brown.

Nice fish.

Thanks guys.  Gonna hit the lake again tomorrow, and hope to find some more of those bronze backs.  I'm sure I'll find the perch while out there, but going to try to target the smallies.

In regards to the question of the brownness of the fish. They take on golden hues under the ice, due to holding in deeper waters with less light penetration.

Smallies are also referred to as "brown fish" where largies are referred to as "green fish"

I've only heard them called "bronze backs" or "smallies".  When it's a big one, I've heard them called "toads".  But maybe that goes for all large fish??
