Bay of Quinte 2015
« on: Dec 12, 2015, 11:39 AM »
With the ice fishing season in Southern Ontario a month behind I was looking back at some of the fish I caught in 2015 and decided to put together a short video. I don't know if it makes things any easier but at least watching fishing is better then not fishing.

I know! I don't know what it is about walleye fishing through the ice but I love. Lakers fight harder but playing a walleye and trying to get it to hit is just awesome.

It was so warm here yesterday I had to put sunscreen on...lol

It's been great but no double digit walleye yet! but at least I have been out over 10 times so far!  Even my wife is catching (sadly she has taken over my tackle bag, preferred rods and hut :( .

I watched a bunch of Youtube videos on this bay and it looks like an excellent fishery. I'm from Vermont and might do a weekend here next month.

10 Times Frozen fly guy...10 Times???

Pikeslayer31, It's a great fishery! If you have the chance to try it out send me a PM and I will give you some tip/locations to fish. It can be a bit tricky to find safe ice with the current.

Yeah, that was the part I was worried about haha. But yeah, I'll definitely PM you sometime soon. Goal is to get out there sometime in February-March for a weekend. Thanks!

You better make it Febuary. Walleye closes March 1 at 11:59pm in the BOQ.

How much ice is on the BOQ right now? Are people out fishing? I know that there was ice at one point but a friend told me it opened up again. I would like to head out this weekend, I'm about 40 min away.

Ice is still sketchy.  Heard that even potters guys are falling through.  The snow on the ice isn't helping even though its been cold the last few days.  I scout and guide for a friend out there and I haven't even been on ice yet and they have been scouting and haven't wet a line yet.  Some spots will probably be fishable by weekend but Id be spudding my way out and very cautious.  The bay is sketchy on good days let alone this winter.  Im staying off ice until I know its worth checking.

So I'm planning a trip in mid February, any outlook on how the conditions are now and what the prospect is for safe ice?  Also can anyone walk me through the regs up there on keeper limits (perch and eyes), and no I wouldn't keep any monsters should I catch them, I'd rather they breed and pass those jeans on.

We're also heading out tomorrow. Buddies were out today at Huffs, 4" of black under 1.5-2" of grey ice. They reported 3 sleds & 1 wheeler out there.

I'm also curious as to whether it would be worth it to get a guide up there.  I've never been and have heard that the conditions there are not favorable for the out of towners and its hard to get on the fish unless you know the lake.  Any truth to this?  If so can anyone suggest a reputable company to contact?

I have gear,  flasher, shanty etc so I won't be needing that sort of stuff.

One last question, are tip-ups/downs allowed out there?  Sorry for so many questions; I tried finding a Canadian regulation and couldn't find anything specific to Quinte....

Tip up/downs are allowed as your 2nd line in the water, never seem to work & you won't see many used. If I was you I'd check out quintefishing.com there is a nice thread by a fellow name tylercurt that shows all access points to BOQ. I believe he's a member here but not sure. Anyways as per a guide, if you watch the weather for BOQ a week before u come up & the quinte board to ensure there is good ice then your fine. But you can find guides on the same site. I've never used any. You need 1/2 to 3/4oz jigs or spoons. Quinte can be humbling even for veterans of the area. It sounds like you have all the right tools to be successful there. Good luck.

So went out to Thompsons yesterday(jan23).. the ice was about 6inch where I was with 3 inch of black and 3 of white crappy ice on top. I fished for most of the morning and marked a bunch of fish, but was only able to get one nice hit but it got off the line. Most fish I marked seemed interested in my lure but then no hits. I tried lots of variations not much luck. only a few perch.  I did see one ATV out there, but I wouldn't have recommended it. The ice was thinner in some spots.

I just got back from 4 days on the bay. Ice was around 5" in most areas (Huffs & shermans)

Growler, I guide is never a bad idea especially on the bay. The eyes in quinte are a bit harder to catch then in other lakes, They don't like tip-ups (as much) and you really need to work them to get them to hit. Having a guide to help you out, espically at first, will really make it much more enjoyable.

Nice fish! What is that hammered gold lure in the pics with two trebles?  It looks like a blade bait of some sort?
