Jawjacker
« on: Nov 24, 2015, 02:25 PM »
Just bought a Jawjacker and will use a 30 inch medium heavy ugly stick. What does everyone use as far as jig and bait on the jawjackers?  I will mostly be fishing rainbows.  Any other tips or experiences with the Jawjacker is appreciated. Hopefully I will get out next weekend to try it for the first time.

Can use anything on the jj whatever they are biting on all its doing is setting the hook for you. It's just a dead stick that sets the hook

Just use whatever they are biting on.  From what I've heard the most important part is to get the trigger sensitivity adjusted correctly.  I've never used them on rainbows, but I have for pike, and that's a whole different ball game.  For rainbows I would use the jigs they come with or something the same size if you need a different color. You want them to be able to get it in their mouth easily before the trigger is tripped.  For rainbows I would set the trigger as sensitive as possible and work up from there if you need to.

I use them all the time for rainbows. I use paddle bugs with a 1/8 oz jig head, I really like glow jigs and a white paddlebug. Get them horizontal and your hookup ratio will increase as well..

Have used them for trout. They work well with the small glow jigs and meal worms

I have used jaw jackers on trout and they work really well you just have to tinker with the sensitivity alittle to get it right.

I have had a lot of success with Berkeley atomic tubes on the jaw jacker. I think the scent helps with the dead stick presentation. Also setting your drag tight enough to set the hook is helpful. It's nice to be able to set them up in water you might not otherwise fish... Caught some good ones in two feet of water on the jj.

They work Great. I almost made a couple but like the take down of the Jawjacker and I'm lazy. Only thing I will say is this, if your setting the pole be in mind to watch what your doing a good smack in the face with a rod has its smarts. After that I just use it as a dead stick and use what i think will catch fish. Trout for me jig or a hook and sinker simple. Just add bait.
No one left behind.

So a much better hookup ratio and similar tension to a tip up?  I guess I better get one.

Make sure not to get the tripping mechanism wet. Simply move it away from the hole before landing a fish. I learned this the same as everything in my life, the hard way.

I like mine. Seem to have better success by using a bobber rather than a direct set.  The line icing up can be a problem, so if it is really cold I prefer polar tip ups.

Use a really small jig.  I think a couple come with it.  Otherwise, the fish begins to mess with it and sets it off before it is inside its mouth.

Thanks for all the tips.  I made it out Sunday for the first time and caught a few trout on the jawjacker.  It really is a cool device and fun to use.  I might invest in a few more to use on those lakes that allow 6 rods.

used mine now for 2 seasons....works well. Use it mostly for ling. I use 1/4 or 3/8 gama heads with 4" yamamoto glow grubs and have no trouble setting it up and or missing strikes with the larger baits. Will get a few more for this season...

I catch more fish on smaller jigs an ice flies with the hook hanging horizontal. Bigger hooks seam to miss the set easier.

I like mine. It has worked on trout and burbot. It is great when you are setting up with a line in or adjusting things. Good investment.

I just got one for XMAS and love it. I use a 27" medium light Fenwick Elite Tech ice rod with lower trigger assembly set on #2 (pin) and rod holder middle pin. I have caught a ton of bluegill, perch and crappie with it. Excellent sensitivity to these light biters and sets hook nicely.
