Jiffy exhaust deflector/tip
« on: Nov 18, 2015, 09:00 AM »
Last year or the year before (I can't rememeber) the 45 degree elbow on my jiffy exhaust broke off and is gone.. So now when I drill I get to inhale every exhaust fume that thing puts out. thet should have designed it woith the exhaust pointing out not up, but anyway... I'm thinking I can add a piece of copper piping or something (like a 45 elbow piece for plumbing with a screw/ lock nut holding it on). Has anyone done this or something similar? Does anyone know what size exhaust outlet is so I can grab a piece of pipe later? Any info and ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

I'm hesitant to buy the Jiffy deflector again. I know it will snap off again and I will loose it. It's very thin and just clamped on. Id really like to make something a little more rugged.

My speculation is that the exhaust baffle is configured to point upward so as to offer some type of protection in case the auger head gets buried in slush when drilling a hole. Although if slush were ever to get in there, the "cup" shape would pack the slush in there for sure.
What material is your baffle made out of, mine is steel and seems quite sturdy.

I believe mine was steel, but it was very thin. I got te auger 3 years ago. That tip actually didn't break it just came Unclipped and I lost the tip. Thinkig I can use an elbow with a cuppler on the end and put a screw with lock nut through  it.

Anyone know what size pipe the exhaust is?

I knew someone would say that lol. Not selling it. I got it as a gift so I have no money in, it and not lookin to spend any more on a new auger. It runs fine and cuts a hole like a champ. Half the season I use the hand auger anyway.

Got it done! Looks like it should work fine. Used a 90 degree copper elbow and bolted it on. Pics below.

Yup not the best design. It was supposed to have a deflector on it but its just clipped on and it should be all one piece, but my tio won't be coming off.
