Lake Erie
« on: Nov 16, 2015, 12:08 PM »
I was thinking about making a few trips to lake Erie this winter, wondering if I need transportation or if I can catch perch/walleye closer to shore anywhere? Thanks

There are lots of people that walk out, You will have to be ready to walk a mile, or 2, maybe 3 if your up for it. I have seen guy that hitch hike out and back also. We do go 3-15 miles out and catch fish, but there are guys that don't go more than 2-4 all year long and catch lots of fish. If you want to spend the money on a guide, be sure to check them out GOOD. Or follow the crowd route and go for it.

don't have to go that far now! you can catch perch in the Erie  metro park marina right now!  if the boat are out thay allow you to fish guys have been getting perch nice one there since September...Ice jig and a spike a couple inches off the bottom with a bobber,...I don't fish down there much any more the fish seem to be kind of funky looking from the chemicals from the farms dumping threw the rivers in to erie.... they get a black tinge to the fish skin...not just the steel head but perch too ...same with the walleyes...  any how erie metro park hot springs the fish get in to there too you can even go fifty to 100 foot off shore in front of the metro park "erie metro park" if the ice freezes..   don't tell them I told you lol's but the fishing used to be good down there till the algae started happening...there always tons of fish down there...if you go let me know how you do some even ice fish in the marina were the docks are....for perch walleye are going to be deeper you usually need a snow  machine to get to them ...  out of stony point  or sterling state park or even out of ohio they do good on eyes....

Way to early to say that.  Many years we fished in boats till November and still got on Erie ice in February, maybe not ice like past 2 seasons, but we still made it out.  I wouldn't throw in the towel yet....

I've heard some nasty stories of people who didn't do their homework on which taxi service to use.  Make sure its a reputable service.

Before two years ago lake Erie didn't freeze for 20 years, I love it down there but it's not worth going unless the ice is safe.

If you're talking about driving out to West Sister then that sounds right.. But more seasons than not, walleye are getting yanked out of Erie, even in MI...

Your right, stay home! Less traffic in the lot! I don't remember many years I haven't plucked a few eyes from Erie through the ice. Is it going to be like the last 2? Probably not...it'll be a normal year and the Window will be short and sweet! You don't have to make it to the reefs to catch fish.
