Ice on the range
« on: Nov 15, 2015, 03:37 PM »
Several back bays were skimmed over yesterday morning.

Lows start looking good Thursday night. Cautiously optimistic about getting out on some farm ponds weekend after thanksgiving.

Yeah, forecast is looking favorable for ice making weather...but depends where you look as well.  Had some ice show up on Saturday morning in a bowl outside. Be happy to see permanent ice makeing come turkey day, but not holding my breath.

Do you know what the lake temps are?

Before this rain the smaller lakes near shore were running 33-35. I need to run traps tomorrow so I will check again.

Made a loop of the neighborhood. Most of the ponds under 15' max depth have 2.5-2.75" at shore. One seemed pretty solid and i could probably fish it and stay dry. Discretion being the better part of valor, ill give it a few days...

Deeper ponds are still open.

A month if we're lucky. This weather is rough, 50 degrees on Thanksgiving is discouraging.
I'd rather be fishing!

We are running 20-30 deg above average so far this year. This reminds me more of a SE MI winter.

I know a guy got out on a small lake with 3" yesterday in the Tower/Ely area but have heard from a few people up there that most small lake's aren't ready yet.

I think four wheelers and normal shantys will be okay by christmas on the bigger lakes within a mile or two of shore. Ice castles in the middle of LOTW are probably going to be a mid January thing, maybe...

Very nice. From what I have heard many of the small/shallower lakes near Ely have 3-4 inches of ice on them. Hopefully the forecast turns cold the next couple of weeks to get the ice further south.

Yeah it is still the small shallow protected lakes. Couple bigger lakes near me had skim on Monday. We got about 2" of snow which will really slow things down with the not very cold temps coming. Glare ice will add more ice pretty quick with lows in the teens, snow covered not so much.

Did you guys up north get hit with much snow on M/T of this week? We got hit pretty good in the East Metro but I heard the snow storms weren't quite as bad north of the cities.

Not much, 1-2" of heavy wet. With the warmer temps this week/weekend it will be gone and I think we will be sitting pretty for the temp drop coming the week of the 14th.

Saw two guys on a small local lake yesterday evening. They were walking around pretty gingerly. I imagine the ice is pretty thin. Spud was packed away for this weekends trip, otherwise I would have stopped to measure thickness.

I was hoping to get out this weekend as well but the lake I was targeting an hour north of me has pretty shotty ice now. It looks like I might have to get my ice fishing fix at the St. Paul Ice Fishing Show this weekend.

Two years ago this time, fridays low was -22F. 11 Months ago the high on the first sunday in Jan was -35F. Last year was very cold, I think that jaded our expectations. Long range forecast is running ten degrees above normal.

This up coming week the warm temps will knock the snow off the ice, starting the 15th we have 5 straight days >15 FDD. Barring any snow on the ice that should put 5-6" on any waters that are already at least skimmed over. Between now and the 15th, again barring any snow, we probably will put on 1.5-2". So my prediction based on accuweathers current forecast is the weekend of the 19th we will be running ATVs on most of the lakes in my area.

Got out again today. 3 more eater pike. One on a flutter rattle spoon meant for walleye and two on a sucker dead stick I set up, all in 20 FOW on the bottom. Nothing on the tip up in 6 FOW.

Found twp more lakes with fishable ice. Hopeing for a crappie evening tomorrow.
