Braid is the absolute worst leader material to use for pike through the ice. Their teeth will slice right through it like butter if the fish is hooked deep and if you do manage to get a big fish up to the hole with a braid leader and she takes a strong run, it will slice your hand wide open.

After hours looking through forums and online I got these. I know they aren't for everyone but I will let you know how they work. 15inch wire leader with a #6 treble.

3' 40# floro for pike and 30# for bass and pickerel. I pre crimp all mine with hooks and swivels and then wrap them on a lindy rigger

Hey guys, 2 years ago I went to floro but where I fish for bass there are pickerel. I agree with steel for pike but lost lots of fish and am assuming most were pickerel. They went through that line like it was butter. when I switched to braided line I didn't lose any due to bite through. Any thoughts???

I mostly fish for bass and for years I didn't use a leader at all, tied direct and seemed to do fine. I started using 12lb floro leaders and maybe my hooksets are too aggressive but I had a bunch of breakoffs when setting the hook in places where I catch mostly bass. I have since bumped up to 25lb floro for my bass set ups. Wire is the only way to go for pike, at least for my taste, though I haven't caught one in a while. :-\

I'm a 14lb.flurocarbon guy for bass ponds. For the pike, I like 30lb. Berkerly steel leader and heat the ends with a lighter, the crimp connectors are ok, but I feel it's a little more stealth with fused ends.

it may be coincidence but i switched to the 30# floro and crimps last year and not only did I catch more fish then past years, and had only one break off (pickerel i suspect)

Fluoro is more resistant to abrasion and is less visible.

My problem is that there are pickerel where I fish for bass and they slice through flouro like a hot knife through butter, even 20lb and that's why I went to braid. I love the idea of the less viability and so I tried the Seagar leader material but had lots of break offs.

I use the Seagard (leader Mat, big difference) for bass all the time and catch lots of pickerel. I have only had the line part as the fish flops on the ice or when I test it after each fish... Knots?

What knots are you using?  I've landed pike up to 14lbs on 30-50lb fluoro LEADER material.

The ponds here in SE Mass have pickerel as big as any. 20lb fluoro is all I ever use because of it. Rarely will I have issues parting my leader. Circle hooks help this!

I've been using fluorocarbon leaders for about 4-5 years. YES there is a difference in the amount of bites over other non clear leaders. I'm not a big pike angler but have caught them over the years on fluro. If I was an avid pike angler, I might know more about the pro's & Cons on that subject. However when it comes to bass fishing, fluro is a noticeable difference!!! If anyone disputes that, they obviously don't bass fish nearly as much as I do. I've tested this throughout the years! Friends fishing next to me with same exact depths, bait size, etc. The fluorocarbon always catches more. In the end its everyone's choice to listen to others or experiment with it yourself. To each their own. I'll keep using fluro and continue to catch numerous 5's, 6's & the occasional 7+.

I started with 40# years ago while experimenting. Then dropped to 30#. If I go to places with known huge pickerel, I will bump back to 40#. But 30# is my usual.
