Hey Fly Tiers, What's In The Vice For Ice?
« on: Nov 04, 2015, 02:55 PM »
I started tying for the ice season. Been working on some nymphs.

I know there's other fly tiers out there. Let's see your stuff!

Looks good Rg. I just started fly fishing this year, I picked up a vice and some material, I believe some ice flies would be a good place to start.

RG,

As a fellow TIER, I can say you are "very well skilled" in the Art!  My 3 FAV materials are Peacock-Hurl, Copper-Wire and Maribou / Flashabou.

Any or all of those will work. I generally start with some sort of scud. It's a major food source in our parts.

Added a few this morning. "Pregnant  tungsten bead body scud", bead head scuds and started on some Ammonites.

Those tungsten bead bodies are heavy little buggers. 4mm bead set on a lead wrap. I stuck them in place with clear UV cure. Worked pretty slick.

Have you ever tried tying them on a jig hook with a keeled bead?  Ive never tied on a normal hook just wondering how the balance once tied on.

Yeah, I've tried micro jigs. Even tried a mid hook line attachment to get them to lay level. However, I've never noticed a difference in catch rates. Just doesn't seem to matter.

Well, I'm back in the saddle ;D
Got a new vise which sparked a round of reorganization for my tying area.

It's getting there. Anyone else tying for the ice?

Nice nymphs!

Fly nutz are everywhere Mac ;D I'll be finishing the floor today and moving a couple lights around. Gotta make time to build a rod for my Grandson's Christmas present too.

The goal this winter is Atlantic Salmon flies. Got some stuff on order....been watching videos and perusing my library. I think I'm ready.

Nice.

Pheasant tails, Hares ears and copper johns of various colors are all solid choices.

I tie foam post disco midges in #16-24 and size the post for neutral buoyancy. I tie it on a 1lb 6" dropper below a small swedish pimple. When the stocker rainbows are being ass faces I whip that sucker out and fling it down the hole. Jig it a bit then let the nymph hover around. Trout nail the heck out of it.

Post some pics of those midges. Love to see them.

Yeah, the vise does some tricks. It'll be a while before I can make it work to potential. The pedestal base is taking some getting used to. I've always tied on a fixed base. I may make provisions to anchor it to the bamboo cutting board I use. I was thinking about some simple hold down clamps. Can't wait to get into some bigger hooks with it.

That's a 1943 Mecury Bill.

that's what makes the dropper so effective, bigger fish ignore the baited hali / jig, take the fly
