When will we be walking on water?
« on: Oct 26, 2015, 06:31 AM »
From the looks of the extended forecast(take it for what you will), we won't be fishing nearly as soon this year as we did last year. I think I was on first ice around Thanksgiving last year. Hoping by Xmas this year... :-\

My guess is northern Iowa small lakes and ponds before Christmas. Southern Iowa mid January

The extended forecast in Central Iowa looks good for cooling temps.  I know some lakes this past weekend around here were in the mid-high 50's.  That is pretty typical.  The temps in the next couple weeks are supposed to be pretty cold and windy, which both will cool these lakes down quickly.

I always hope for Dec. 1st!

I'm guessing between thanks giving and December 1st we will be on ponds in NW IA.

Unfortunately it probably wont be until X-mas.  Waaaaaay too warm the next 2 weeks.  Even up here in SC showing only 2 nights at 32 or below (30 and 29) over the next 10.  All highs in 50s and 60s except to in mid 40s........going to be a while.

If you can't wait to get on first ice, and do not like being badly disappointed, you probably shouldn't look at any long-range weather forecasts for the state of Iowa right now.

El Nino is the child of the devil.

Long range forecasts are sketchy at best, the soil temperatures are tracking right where they usually do we are currently at 44 degrees for the most part. The days are getting short and the sun is getting less powerful everyday. The soil usually freezes the first or second weekend of December and the ponds lakes follow close behind, (soil sampled for a living). Bottom line is that we will get ice when we get ice. That being said, the earliest I expect to be on the ice is the second or third weekend of December.

I think we are going to be hard-pressed to find safe ice on our big lakes up here before Christmas this year.

Weather is just too warm. I am going to be trolling for lake trout this weekend...........

If the weather would make up its mind I might be on shortly after Thanksgiving.  Smaller ponds that is.  Bigger water probably second week in December.  It is getting close though!

I will take farm ponds all day, as long as it gets me on the ice. I can't wait to get my shack down from the rafters in the garage and start getting it prepped, I am trying to hold off til after first season shotgun hunting but that may not be possible. As long as winter comes I will be happy, last November was such a tease. My prediction stands second or third weekend of December. Can't wait!!

We will be on the ice here the weekend after Thansgiving I'm guessing. Or at least some of us will be. I'm the guy that usually gives it an extra week.

I hope you guys are right, and of course weather forecasts can and will change. But, looking at every prediction for the next ten days in northern Iowa I think the best you guys up there can hope for is ice on small ponds by the last day of November.

There are two or three days in a row predicted where the temp won't get above freezing, but they are bracketed by multiple days with highs in the upper thirties to low forties. Part of the problem is the water is not that cold yet. We will need a few days of cold weather to chill it before it will freeze, and I don't know that two or three nights with lows around ten or so will be enough to do that on anything besides very small bodies of water.

As for southernish Iowa, we will be lucky if we are on small ponds here before Christmas.  >:(

in southeast iowa this morning on my way to the bow stand there was an 1/8th inch on a puddle the size of a truck.  heck of a lot better sight then the temps we were having the last couple weeks.  im still thinking mid January and another season of "SORRY WIFE BUT I HAVE TO GO NORTH THIS WEEKEND"

Hey Trump! Pleasure to meet ya! I grew up in Southeast Iowa in Ottumwa, and Agency. I married my long time GF and moved to BC to be with her. I miss ice fishin back home, usually make it there every summer to visit family. We have ice already all the way up here, but only on the mountain lakes. Here in the Creston Valley should be iced over in a week! Keep me updated on how the fishin is back home, keeps me from getting homesick! I can even point you to a few honey holes as well!!!

Colder temps now forecast for this week.

By next weekend (December 5-6) you guys up in northern Iowa might be able to get out, at least on some smaller waters.

Not in the near future, anything around here that will freeze at night will thaw out during the day. I have shoulder surgery on 12/14 so I won't be on the ice until mid Jan at the earliest provided I find someone to do my drilling for me.

Had about 1/2 inch in a few areas, none on others this past weekend.  I'm gonna say it'll be at least Christmas.

This past week did not chill things down like I hoped it would.  :-\

Right now it looks like the best we could hope for is safe ice a few days before Christmas anywhere in Iowa.
