Marcum firmware update for 2015
« on: Oct 13, 2015, 09:44 AM »
Contacted Marcum today to see if they planned on releasing any new firmware for the LX-7 before Ice fishing.
Sent them this video showing issues I've had.

Good news!

Quote
"There is an update for the LX-7 scheduled for release this ice season.  An exact date has not been determined.
Thanks for sending the videos.  It is possible that the erratic behavior is from the Dynamic Depth.  If you want to use the Dynamic Depth, be sure to use the manual Dynamic Depth, where you select the depth range. "

Then I asked if there will be any new features or if he can tell what the firmware will address.

Quote
"There will not be any new features added.  The main thing that is to be fixed is the shallow [<5’] water issue"

Hopefully this firmware update will work flawlessly so I spend more time fishing and less time rebooting or messing with settings.
Who am I kidding, I will still be messing with settings.

Is this strictly for the LX7 or will is branch into the 9? I'm curious if the camera causes any issues for software updates since that's a part of the unit!

I just asked about the LX-7.
Since the 9 is their flagship model I would venture to guess that it will also have new firmware.

Do you have to ship your unit in for the update?

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

The LX 6,7 and 9 series should be around for quite a while.

There are many discussion on the LX series vs. whatever your looking at, just have to search the forum or internet.

Thanks for sharing on the update, I asked them to add a demo mode that shows an ice fishing setup versus the "behind the boat" demo they have now so I can show my buddies how they work. Adding that demo mode would also let us tweak our settings before we go out just to get everything perfect. Hopefully...

You would think but ill bet half the units were sent back after not working correctly. I personally know 2 guys that called it quits with Lx7 after the last update still couldn't fish in under 5 ft of water! Were we fish u catch walleyes in 3ft of water some days!!

In all fairness, this update should be out well before mid January. Marcum should be killing themselves to fix this way before any ice has formed

they all use marcum. i think they want to field test the new firmware on ice before saying its good to go.

they have been field testing the rt9 and liking it and only the gps needs some tuning and fcc approval, the rest of it is ready for market.
i might pick one up and let the wife use the lx7. i think i read only a 7 hour run time tho on the rt9, but i carry extra sla batteries for shack lighting and if i need to replace the sonar battery on ice.

I had no issues with my LX9 last year other than it eating battery when I was using both camera and flasher, duh. These units aren't going anywhere, they simply were pointing out they updated the old style of face that the older style flashers had. I've used both Marcum and Vexilar, I like both. I simply chose Marcum due to the separation and digital ability, it DOES make a difference.

The RT seems like a lot of money just to have the gps capability. My iphone has the nav app and does the same thing for 10 bucks

I've had nothing but problems with my LX-7. From day 1 it has been a PITA. Was in their shop longer than i fished with it the first year i had it. Last season still having issues, contacted John Marshall and he was awesome to work with. That is until he decided not to return phone calls and emails. Last i heard from him he asked me to take the unit out and try a few things. I did and even sent him video of the issues i was having, and not a single word in response. I have owned the VX-1 pro, the 3, the 5 and the 7. Loved them all other than the 7, But i will never give Marcum another dollar.

Not really.  I like and use the phone app too; but it's not the same as a large screen chart plotter.  The RT would be an awesome addition to ice fishing and be even more useful in the boat - the other 7 months of the year.  @)

Took a look to see if they posted the firmware they said was going to be released.  No big surprise that there is nothing new.  Pondering getting rid of the LX7 now.

I just got my LX7 back from a warranty repair for the transducer and it came back with an updated firmware version. I believe it was 5.01 and indeed no longer had ice or open water modes but rather gain 1 and gain 2. Confused me a bit at first when trying to get it back to my prior settings.

What would you replace it with? Just because they haven't released an update?

Ive posted my issues, not going to regurgitate them now. Been waiting for Marcum to address the software issues with firmware updates.  When i call and talk to a company then get lied to about issue resolution time frame it doesnt sit well with me.
Hopefully the V5 release works great.

If not, then i will be looking at the digital hummingbird or going back to a Vexilar.

it's odd they are installing their new firmware on units going out the door, but not releasing it to the public yet. at least we know it's done.
maybe i'll send mine in to get the updated firmware.

Perhaps those of us getting it put on our repaired units are the 'guinea pigs'. I'll let folks know if the unit suddenly catches fire or begins to swear at me.

Writing a firmware update is one thing, installing it can be quite troublesome sometimes.  Especially in untrained hands.
