Recommend An Insulated Hoody???
« on: Oct 08, 2015, 08:38 AM »
Looking for an insulated hoody that I can wear under my bibs.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest an insulated shirt and a nice hat. If u need to toss your coat on with a hoody underneath, its a PITA.

Very warm ...they make cargo style sweatpants as well

http://www.modells.com/product/-01212161004.do?sortby=bestSellers&from=Search

I found the sweatpants tooooo warm w or w/o thin thermals

I found out that just wearing a vest is a great way to layer ...keep your core warm and you wont feel AS COLD

i'm looking to try one of these. they made a newer version with out the fleece in the arms for easier on/off. has a different name or added word to the name.

http://www.thornebros.com/shop/pc/Striker-Ice-Performance-Hoodie-p39092.htm

i have a heavy duty hoodie that has a lot of bulk and is warm enough, but i'd like to try less bulk and keep the warmth.
they are nice to keep the wind off the neck, when you don't need the parka hoodie up yet.
i wear my hoodie over the bibs. easy to get a parka on over it. its in the sled most days until the sun drops with the temp.

I have the Climate parka ...that has a removable inner jacket which I believe is similar to the hoodie in material/construction ...minus the hood.

It is very warm ..kinda a compressed fit ..I didn't wear it with the parka at all last season..because of the fit ..I just went with the Climate Bibbs (minus the inner lining)  thermal top, sweater, hooded sweat shirt..and a vest...then the Parka only if it was brutal...last year was quite a challenge as to what to wear ...new Climate Bibs/Parka as well as new boots.. Muck Artic sport...I was adding and removing layers pretty much most of the season .

I absolutely love my Cabela's Micro Berber Hoody! I've had it for 3 years now, and the past 3 years, I have not needed to wear my coat once! It is all I need to keep me warm, just make sure to have a nice base layer shirt underneath, and it's a great hoody! They are also on sale right now, so it's a great deal!

I have thought about trying a Fishbum product for a couple years now. They claim they are awesome, both windproof, and waterproof, and super warm. The price is a little high, but I finally bit the bullet and wanted to try one for the fact that it's waterproof. I haven't received it yet, but when I do, I'll give my thoughts on it!

Thanks guys.  To clarify, I am looking for something that I can wear under my bibs when I am not wearing my parka (e.g. sunny or in the shelter).  I shave my head, so I am always wearing a hat.  My thought is that the hood would be nice to keep the wind off of my neck, but not choke me with a zipper under my chin.

matzilla is absolutely correct! That is the same exact base layers that I wear every single day I'm hunting or fishing in cold weather! It's absolutely awesome stuff! I still wear the micro berber hoody over the base layers, and under my Striker Ice bibs.

Same here...base layer + an old BoneCollector micro berber hoodie for me - I haven't worn a parka in 2 years. When it is colder than 0 or windy out I will add an old synthetic waffle shirt

I have a couple Dickies brand hoodies that have the zipper front.  They are really comfortable fairly thin and would fit under bibs quite nicely.  They have a liner that looks like long johns, so I guess you would call them insulated.  I think they would be perfect for under bibs for if you wanted your parka off.  Cheap too.

Not real sure if you wanna spend the dough but you seriously need to check out Fishbumoutifitters.com hoodies and jackets, if you like a little style you will love them, and pretty good quality imo, but for sure look into it.

How does the size on the ECWCS run?  I note one of the reviews says that it runs small.  They come in tall sizes, but I am 6'6"/270 with the sleeve length of an orangutan, so ordering "one size bigger" is not an option.

I don't like a compressed fit generally ...I have found that most base layers run small ..I wear a size large in t shirts and long sleeve henleys ....I go XL in all my base layers ...dosent cut off/pinch near my arm pits  .. the extra room and loft is the best fit for me .

My vote would be for any of the mid weight or heavy weight Polor tech ECWCS base layers.  My personal favorite is the kind that has the square grid fleece lining that traps air. Super warm amd comfy for the weight.  It is what the army issues and one thing that I dont plan to give back. Cabelas carries the fancier civilian models, but if you want to save some coin grap up some surplus.   All my soldiers, including myself love our "waffle" tops.

On sizing for the ecwcs systems. The bottom base layer that touches the skin or "silk weights" can be loose or compression. I prefer loose for better mobility and breathability. All the other layers work best when worn loose as it traps more air, thus insulating better.    For a point of reference. I am 6'3" and 230 and wear a large long in gi issued sizes. I also have an xl top that fits fine too, just a little loose.  In relation to t shirts i am between sizes with all my shirts being lg or xl depending on brand.

They have a tall size selection as well...the fit is a bit snug but not overly tight - close to the skin. If you want something to fit like a normal shirt would then order a size larger.
