knots for braid
« on: Oct 04, 2015, 09:10 AM »
hi, im about to change out my tipup lines with a braided line and i hear braid slips when tied. so, would you tell what knots will hold better ? I might also tie to a fluorocarbon leader....would that change the knot i use ?

When people talk about braid slipping they are talking about super lines like Power Pro, not so much dacron.  I've always used the old standard fisherman's aka Trilene knot,  I even use it with PP I just give it one extra twist and I've never had an issue.  For connecting your leader to your main line just use a barrel swivel.

Thank you both, mine is power pro.

Do NOT use Power Pro to spool a tipup.  It's a bad idea on multiple fronts.

Well first and foremost is it's a safety hazard.  Given the strength to diameter ratio of today's super lines they effectively turn into razor wire under tension.  The first time you set the hook into a big fish, or have one scream off on a run you'll wish you hadn't.  I've sliced my finger open setting the hook into a 30"ish pike with 20lb dacron, if it was PP it would have cut me to the bone.  I've cut myself trying to break PP off of snags open water fishing more than once, and that's being careful.

Dacron is nice and supple which makes it easy to handle and feed evenly on the spool.  You can pile it up on the ice next to you while you're bringing a fish in and as long as no one disturbs it you can pay it back out without much drama,  I think the PP would be a lot more likely to get stuck in all the little nooks and crannies in the ice and frozen snow on top of it.

Last it's ungodly expensive compared to the alternative.

I love Power Pro for open water fishing, that's where it shines due to the smaller diameter allowing you to fish a heavier than normal line without giving up casting performance or being more noticeable to the fish.  These are non issues though with tip ups where you don't cast and run a mono or fluoro leader for visibility.
