Predictions? Yeah.....I know It's Early :) :) :)
« on: Oct 01, 2015, 07:02 AM »
Any thoughts on first ice predictions this year for NY? Has anyone heard any long-term predictions on the type of winter we're gonna have? Maybe late-November upstate? I hope so!

Late start to the winter according to the Weather Channel, and you know... they're always right.  ;D

Hope their wrong but NOAA forecast for the Northeast shows a warmer than normal Nov/Dec/Jan

They were pretty much dead on last year - and they were right calling for a warm September back in June.

The ugly charts (for ice fisherman - probably favorable for everyone else) are here - http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/multi_season/13_seasonal_outlooks/color/t.gif

I predict it will eventually get colder which will form ice...  Than it will snow and people will complain its to hard to walk.. Smitty sled thread will blow up than...  Is it safe for sleds or wheelers? Than we will get a layer of slush and later it might re freeze or just melt...
There seems to be a pattern.... ;)

According to the weather experts(if their is such a thing),there will be no ice for W.N.Y. this year.Too bad we couldn't save some of that surplus ice from the last 2 years.

not that i like to say it but i have been saying it for a few years now, the seasons are rolling further back on the calendar. were getting on the ice later and later each year. however we are still able to be on the ice later each year as well. i am hoping to walk on water by mid dec here in the lower southern teir but have a feeling that it will be right about the beginning of january.
boss spoons, they can catch it all!!!

Shooting for before Christmas in the Southern adks. I won't go on less than 5" and won't jump the gun like two years ago. Bad experience. Hope for a cold December.

I only like bass when I can get them through the ice.
I hope to be on top of them while they're still in season.  ;D

looking like later then sooner in 2015-16
I have been on good ice by first or 2nd  week in dec for the last 4-5 years or so ..
Hearing of warmer wetter winter.. Not what we like from water walkers, but maybe a recovery for fisheries

Ice? What's ice? It's still deer season, who cares about ice?

Mid January for Oneida. I'll say January 17th.

Not as late as that warm winter we had a few years back, but not early. I will put it back further on Oneida to the last week of Jan., and maybe the last week in Feb. for Erie if at all.  Doesn't matter, my boat floats just as well in Jan. as it does in July.

I say December 27th for lakes in the ADKs, New Year's Day for Black Lake, and January 20th for Oneida. As long as we have 2 good months of ice, I will be happy.

Last year ponds were frozen already right now, everyone thought early ice but I went against the grain and predicted Oneida lake would freeze later,  in January like normal, this year i'm going against the el nino warm thinking, I think Oneida will freeze  normal again.  January 6th-10th.  last 2 winters have been tough, 2 months of winter wouldn't be all that bad either.  ;D
