Approaching some nice fall weather this week. I knocked the snot out of crappies Friday. At this rate I'll have to eat a bag of fish every week before ice! Great year for crappie. All over the prairie on the west side so far....

I've been ice fishing this area for 15 years and I have always been on ice by the 1st Saturday in December.

Usually first week in January .... but have been on the hard water in late December some years .

61 days and its really cooling down here. We're gonna have a warming trend this upcoming weekend, but it should be short lived.

Finally cooling down, looking at low 30s at night starting Thursday. Hope to be on ice in 53 days. Might wait an extra week just to be safe. I've gotten that way in my older years.

I'm usually all about duck and goose hunting this time of year, and even archery deer, but this year all I'm thinking about is ice fishing. Can't wait to get on the ice!

Looks like I'll have to shoot a few South Dakota birds this weekend, and get the feel of the state in preparation of the upcoming hard water season! I just moved hunting stuff in front of summer fishing, and ice fishing gear is right behind the hunting... Here we go folks!

I think we're on schedule for a normal start. I'll prolly wait for the 2nd week in December just to be safe. Definitely gonna start on the prairie this year if its good enough.

I think so. 30 days til the 5th of December which is a Saturday! It snowed last night in Custer, which is a great place to start.

In the past I have started at the smaller lakes. Horsethief, Lakota, Bismark, but now they have dredged them and refilled them and there's prolly nothing but mountain carp (trout) in them. I don't know when or where I'm going to start this year because of that. Maybe just go to Wall or somewhere on the prairie. I don't know where the ice will be safe early since I'm changing it up this year.
