Ice Lake Rebels
« on: Sep 01, 2015, 09:13 PM »
I love this show, cuz I get to see ice during summer. But jeez, they have snowmobiles and a hovercraft and they're still catching fish with willow sticks? When I started ice fishing I bought cross-style tip-ups at Walmart for $3.00.

Makes ya really ponder on how much money you spent compared to them... but hey, at least it's better than Ice Holes.

We watch it as well. In recent episode Stephan brought home a new "fireplace"....he opened the box and lo and behold it is a Wise Way pellet stove, just like the one Drifter is putting in his new cabin! Must be a Wise Way dealer up there on Great Slave.

Interesting show

I could not figure out what kind of stove came in a flat box. Until he opened it up!!!

They look like a great way to go as they do not require $lectricity to operate them.

They really need more episodes.  One episode its brutal cold and the next they are talking about the breakup and above freezing days.  Love the show though.

I love the show too, it just pains me to see them fishing with sticks because their lives seemingly depend on what food they can harvest and they could prolly catch more fish with better gear. I know they have to have a Walmart somewhere in Alaska. One guy could make one run and get them all some Shakespeare stuff

It's just more fake reality TV is all.
And yes  we have a Walmart in town as well as other stores with tackle.
It's all just show.
No, they don't need fish to survive.
They can just head to the grocery store a mile away from their house boats!!!

FYI it is filmed in the North West Territories in Canada not in Alaska.
  ;)2

Here is a map showing where the house boats are moored.

yup, misleading info when they speak about how they have to make due with what ever they have because of being so "remote".
i still like the vehical used to save lives on the show from austria? with the tracks and added cars and trailers it can pull.
next time we watch it will be in a new "light".
thanks for the insight Drifter!

Im really curious how they can set willow stick fishing rigs and not have the fish spit the hook.  As I understand it in Canada you must fish using barb-less hooks....can someone clarify?

Years ago I fished north of Thessalon, Ontario. The natives all fished with willow sticks stuck in the snow over the hole. There line was wound on a board with v notches in each end. They set there depth with a loop hung on the stick. They stuck a piece of cloth in the loop as a flag. A bunch of line was laid out on the ice so the fish could run. Just a simple no nonsense tip up.
