When using a Salmo Chubby Darter do you tie on direct or use a snap swivel?

I agree. - don't use snap swivels

I always use fas snaps for lipless baits

I always start with snap swivel. I change lures often. Once I decide on the size and color pattern. I usually tie on direct.

I tie on direct with a barrel swivel a couple feet above.
