Looking for tip up line for my new set up..
« on: Aug 25, 2015, 08:45 PM »
Just bought 5 new heritage laker Muskie traps. I'm trying to see what everyone else is using for line. If you could let me know or put a picture up that would be great. Thanks.

The last few years I have used Cortland or Woodstock braided nylon or Dacron line. Usually between30 to 40 pound test then I tie in around 2 feet of 15 pound of Berkley 'Big Game" monofilament add a swivel then 3 feet of ten to 15 pound test fluorocarbon. I'm assuming you maybe going after Muskie given the traps you have purchased so you may want a steel leader or heavier fluorocarbon. I did not see it on their website yet but Ice Shanty sponsor Fish 307 sells bulk spools of braided tipup line From U.S. line company.

Do you have any problems with the mason line freezing to the ice or cutting your hands?

I would use 30 or 40 pound dacron braid then a good barrel swivel then your leader.  This is the set up I use on mine and never had any problems.

I tried that, The line was such a large diameter, I couldn't get very much on my tip-ups.

its your call bud but you should use ice line only ! that's what its made for and there will be no suprises. just google ice fishing line and you will have massive amounts of choices. I use 40# Woodstock and have never had a problem. if you use something other than ice line and encounter a problem its a royal pain re-doin everything. again its up to you but be patient and do it right and you wont end up with regrets. don't read into it too much. use ice tip-up line for tip-ups. that simple.
may the good lord help me to see the day when i catch the one that got away

40# woodstock has always worked for me. Barrel swivel then a Flouro carbon leader. 10 or 12 lbs for most bass ponds 40lbs for my traps set up for pike.
Hard water Tight lines Flags up. Doesn't get any better than that

I love the line that came on my Indian Hills. It has a wax coating that sheds water and prevents the line from absorbing water. Doesnt sound like a big deal till u have a pig peel off 100yrds of line and your pulling it in and trying to manage it. The non wax stuff freezes, freezes to itself, freezes to the ice, makes a frozen pile of line next to your hole. Better hope that fish of a lifetime doesnt take a second run.

The wax coated stuff doesnt freeze up like that..

Also helps keep your hands drier as the line your pulling in isnt water logged and soaking your hands/gloves with ice water and freezing up.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

I use #30 lb Blood Red Woodstock nylon ice fishing line on all 14 of my tip ups and am very happy with it. The red I find is easier to rewind large amounts of line/
