Spring build!
« on: Jul 17, 2015, 11:49 PM »
So.... Dad and I decided right at ice out last year that it was time for a new wheelhouse. We have two other wheelhouses that we have built and are still functional, but the road worthiness is some what questionable beyond 30 miles and are interested in checking out lakes a bit farther out. (Will make a post of my rebuild shortly). The other driver is the fact that I have two boys (5 & 3) that are gaining interest and the larger of out two houses (6x10) didn't have the room or sleeping accommodations to suite the need.

Anyway, we were lucky enough to have a friend that has built numerous houses from the frame up. With his expertise ( and labor) we were able to build our dream shack. It started with a CW rhino lined frame out of Vesta, MN ( highly recommend). Since I am a computer nerd I was able to mock up some ideas for dad and I to review (Google Sketchup is awesome!). Once we had the plans and layout, it was time to go to work! Our 6x14 +3'v quickly took shape!  What I quickly found is that the decking and framing is the quick part.... Lots of decisions were obviously made on door and window placement. Even more mind boggling than the egress decisions was the wiring! Since we were essentially building the house from the inside out, all decisions had to be carefully made on where switches, lights, TV jacks, and outlets were going to go. As mentioned this was an "inside out" build meaning that we framed it, put up pine, and wired it before doing the sprayed insulation and aluminum.  I didn't have much to do with the siding or finish cabinetry so can't comment much on that (thanks DW). All that I know is that it turned out perfect! We definitely saved a little$$ over a comparable IC manufactured house but the majority of the driver behind building one versus buying one was knowing that the construction was superior and also making sure that we were able to get layout that we wanted. Big shout out to our friend/adviser/builder for the help and work that he put into this. He was the brains of the operation!! I am still glad he let us "help" with the build and have a piece in the final product. Here are some pics. Hope to get the house out of the shop to get some better ones shortly....

Sorry for the long post but figured that the die yards will muscle through the reading, especially with the limited posts going on. The worse part about building a house in the spring is waiting for fall to come. Until we get the needed ice, I can sit in it and dream! First ice pictures will be on their way in 7 months or so..... Enjoy!

Got the cushions back today! Bottom bunk is 30", top is 36". Top bunk is made of two 18" pieces so that we have a backrest when sitting down below.

So... Finally got time to spending some time on the shack this weekend to finish up some of the odds and ends. Ended up getting the poly put on the cabinets, new tin signs hung up, rattle reels mounted, CO detector, etc. I got looking at the bunk setup and we may have made a mistake. Bottom bunk is 30"... top is 36". Having the extra width is nice because I can throw the two boys up there (for now...), but it is a pain to get my fat arse up there if need since it over hangs farther than the bottom. Anyone running a ladder in their wheel house? Any ideas for something that doesn't take up a ton of room?
