Ashokan Reservoir Info
« on: Jun 16, 2015, 09:24 AM »
Anyone have any info for the Ashokan Reservoir in the Catskill Mts? Do both the east and west basins freeze over in the winter? How's the fishing during the winter months? Any special regulations to be aware of, Etc.? We are looking at the possibility of running an IPA tournament event there and need to know as much as we can about the waterway. Thanks!! @)

I don't believe you can fish it during winter ...also tons of regulations for NYC DEP   ....ie permit required no gas motors batteries shelter have to be marked etc

http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/watershed_protection/ashokan.shtml

http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/recreation/recreation_rules.shtml

http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/pdf/recrules/recrules.pdf

(d) Ice Fishing. Ice Fishing is allowed only on the Amawalk, Bog Brook, Boyds Corner, Cross
River, Diverting, East Branch, Muscoot, Titicus, West Branch, Croton Falls and Middle Branch
Reservoirs, on Lake Gilead and Lake Gleneida and on ponds located in Hiking Areas, Public
Access Areas, and certain Designated Use Areas as indicated by NYCDEP on sign postings, and,
when applicable, on the NYCDEP website, on Public Maps, and/or in other publications and
notices. All other reservoirs are off-limits to ice fishing due to safety considerations

PS might want to post on the SENY thread

Tim ditto Hardwater Diehard's and Raquettedacker's posts since the Ashokan and other NYC water supply reservoirs in the Catskill Mountain area of the state are linked via aquaducts to the reservoirs in Putnam,Westchester counties water levels will fluctuate causing unsafe ice conditions. Think of the ice surface as a drop/false ceiling over the water below with an air gap between ice and water. Another problem with the NYC reservoir system is the prohibition of gas powered augers because of fear of water contamination due to fuel spillage onto the ice/snow surface. If you still have the South East NY. fishing book I gave you back in Nov. of 2014 at the SENY member meeting look through it you may find a large lake that fits your requirements for an IPA tournament. Unfortunately off the top of my head I can not think of a lake in south east part of NYS the would meet your needs for a tournament.
Thank you for thinking of us south east NY. folks for an IPA event. One last thought if you have contact info. for Deweyicefish/Duane get in touch he resides in Pinebush,NY. (Orange county) ,I know he has competed in different IPA events maybe he will have some ideas.

Thanks for the info fellas! I'll drop Duane a call and see if he knows of any waterways to run an event on, even if it's a Team-Only event that we can run on a smaller waterway. I want to keep our options open and cover more of the state, as many of the teams that fish our series like the challenge of new waterways.  @)
