One of those gentlemen was the Brother of my wife's cousin's wife.  It was a shock to all of the family.  he was a seasoned outdoorsman, and no one in the family understood why he would risk that "one more outing" with his experience.  We had been having warm then cold weather, not always refreezing overnight, ice was not clear, hard ice, and was barely thick enough to hold a person, even if it had been clear hard ice.  Just goes to show you, even years of experience can make mistakes, some more costly than others.

Always, always, be safe first, or it might be your last.

Farm ponds are the first to go when it comes to late ice.  The small body of water warms a lot faster then the larger lakes.   Prayers to the family.

Very sad.  I remember it on the news when it happened.   Being I'm the same age as the youngest one I says to myself old fool don't take chances and stayed off the ice.

Condolences to all the families!  I fell through about 8-10 yrs ago and was lucky! I was able to get to the edge of an 10 ft area of shattered ice to get to some solid ice and got out. I had a very cold 1/4 mile walk back to the truck at the boat ramp parking area. Everyone else in the area followed me off the ice as soon as the pick up their gear. I DO NOT go on the ice now when the thaw starts in the spring.
