TODAYS WHITEFISH GRAND SLAM! (Pic's)
« on: Apr 08, 2015, 06:40 PM »
Went out to track down some whitefish today with Whitefishlover and boy oh boy did we get into some nice whitefish and a couple of togue. It was steady action most of the day jigging most of the fish and getting 2 whitefish on my Jawjacker!  Ended the day with 8 whitefish each and 1 togue each.  We always have a little contest each trip and today was a tie on both species of fish.. ;D  Here are the pics..  Only kept 6 whitefish rest was realesed. :)

Yum. Nice whites
May God bless and keep you always, may your wishes all come true.
May you always do for others and let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars and climb on every rung,
May your hands always be busy, may your feet always be swift.
May you have a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful, may your songs always be sung.
May you stay forever young.

We thought of you lots today Joe  :woot:  The fishing gods paid us back for that miserable day in January.  That togue was fun on my 36" HT Ultra light with a 5mm Fiskas  :o  Next year Joe.

Those whitefish are perfect bait for big lakers, if they are legal.  Big lakers feed heavily on them and they are not too big.

I think they're a little too moist to keep lit.
I've got the itch... No, not that one. It's the good kind.

I personally have never smoked them.  I like them in panko fried in a light oil.  I am going to blackened these and try that, I am guessing it will be very good.  One thing with whitefish, you have to eat them fresh.  They are not very good after they are frozen in my opinion.  A good video here on preparation.......

Smoked whitefish are extremely excellent. I worked at an upscale fish market when I first had it. Almost had to keep it under lock and key.

Here’s a couple recipes and a how too. (I like it right off the fish, maybe with some crackers and made into a dip too! )

Description
Smoked flaky smoked whitefish mixed with fresh ground pepper and sharp cheddar.

Ingredients
3⁄4 pounds smoked whitefish (filleted)
7 ounces whitefish salad
1⁄4 cup
yellow onion (grated)
3 ounces
extra sharp cheddar cheese (coarsely grated)
1 teaspoon
lemon zest (grated )
1 tablespoon
lemon juice
2 1⁄4 cups
panko bread crumbs (divided )
1 pinch
freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
2 tablespoons
canola oil (for frying )
Instructions
First de-bone and fillet the whitefish, then chop it into relatively small pieces. In a large bowl, combine the whitefish, whitefish salad, onion, cheese, lemon zest and juice and 1/4 cup Panko bread crumbs. Season to taste with pepper and mix well. Sprinkle remaining Panko on a plate, divide the whitefish mixture into four and shape into cakes, coating them lightly with the Panko. (If making ahead, put on a plate, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until needed.) To cook, heat the oil in a large heavy-bottomed sauté pan over medium heat. Add the fish cakes and fry for 5-6 minutes. Turn and cook the other side for about 4-5 minutes. Allow cakes to rest 5 minutes before serving.

OK, I found a lot of stuff...  ;D

I’ve got a couple rod holders that clip on the edge of a bucket or basket. I’m thinking I might put something like a down rigger release on my pack basket for a deadstick jaw jacker set up.

thats why they have disappeared from most of their habitat. they get fished out before they get a chance to grow and reproduce.  out of a doz. lakes i fished as a kid that had them only 1 still has them and they're rare. they tried stocking them to bring them back but it was unsuccessful. they are a very delicate fish that is susceptible to pollution and warm waters.  they die if caught trolling in the summer because they can't take  bieng hauled threw the warm upper layers. I'm surprised the state doesn't protect them more than they do.

The whitefish have disappeared because of the PH has dropped in all watersheds  affected by acid fall out and additional Phosphors running into the watershed from additional wood cutting and dead trees dying from acid rain fall out. Its results are now being felt in the ocean .Smelts and small bait fish dying off.
