Who can last the longest?
« on: Apr 05, 2015, 06:02 AM »
16 degrees here this morning and it looks cold for the next week. Who said ice fishing is done? We'll be going to the end of May. Who can set the record.

If there is ice somewhere may 1st I'll hit it!  May make it out a couple more times jigging but I need to get started on firewood so if I do anymore fishing it's gonna be pretty limited

Leaving for vacation on the 16th, but fully plan on several trips before then.  And if there is still a few inches when I get back, I will be on that.  Big lakes still have 30+ inches.  Warm water lakes that froze early and got the early snow have less, around 20".

I am not planning on throwing in the towel yet. Still 24 to 30 inches where I was yesterday.  I am determined to salvage this season with a day of getting into some panfish.

I measured the ice Friday .and what was over 36" is now 18" of solid ice  with this 25° temp it should hold for another week as the edges of the lake was still solid.

13 degrees in Milbridge this AM. Just got back from a snowmobile ride, trying to drain the tank down. While riding through a snow squall up around Mopang I was thinking to myself I should be trolling not riding this damn thing.

I'm not done! I'm at work today, planning where we are going to fish tomorrow! A couple of my favorites are closed now, so I'll have to "settle" but there is still some good fishing to be had.

I'm headed to St. Thomas on the 22nd, got some salt fishing planned for that week, fishing in shorts for fish that are hundreds of pounds is going to be the demise of my ice fishing season. But at that time, I can chalk up another good season!

I fished this morning. Def didn't feel like April. Plenty of ice and the edges are still solid. Even had a snow squall come thru around 9.

I fished Sebago Friday, in the AM there was 18" of real good ice, late afternoon there was 14" and about half of it was soft and white, the bottom of the holes had opened up a lot as well.

I may have been the last of us on the ice in past years but it won't happen this year. I have too much to do and the nearest "A" ponds are an hour away. I think my latest ever was April 22nd. Most years it's around the 15th -17th. I am probably done on the ice this year but I am not draining the fuel from the auger until there's no safe and legal ice to fish.

I made it out on the ice til about April 5th in 2013. 2014 I got out on the 14th and this year i should beat last year by 2 weeks..I might be pushing it but i'm going for May 1st!! I fish the same spot til the end every year. Still 2 feet of ice last weekend but a couple warm windy days could bring it down to 12 quick...Time will tell. Heres a couple pics from last 2 years.

Sebago still good, just walked off, even better conditions then yesterday. Ghost town of course, I would have crossed the big bay no problem.

Cool, where were you? We where in the gut, but it seemed like the further we went out on the big bay the better the ice got.

On Sebago today....good ice....melting along the shore....fed the eagle another Togue..
Found what appeared to be a large smelt , 8 inches or so, in the digestive system of one of
our togue. Maybe someone was using them for bait in the last day or so.

Landlocked smelt are naturally in sebago, right with the landlocked salmon that feed on them.

Woodchip, this eagle had an orange band on one leg and a white one one the other leg'
Yes Sebago has a lot of smelts but they are usually 5 inches long or less. Before the state in all its wisdom stocked togue
and before the DDt problem smelts up to 15 inches were commonly caught there.
