Lucky to be alive....
« on: Apr 04, 2015, 06:47 PM »
Went out today by myself and my buddy was meeting up with me a hour and a half after I got there. I walked out about 200 yards set up my 6 tilts and pre drilled 6 more for my buddy and caught 3 good bass a crappie some perch and a few pickeral. My buddy showed up and he fell through up to his knees on the shore. And then he went to go back to his house to get other boots and so I decided to walk back to the truck and I fell completely through about 100 yards out but Managed to get back up on the ice and get to shore but fell in another 4-5 times before I got back to shore. I waited for my buddy to get back and I tried to come up with a plan to go back out to get my sled auger my tip ups, my radio and my ipad. I got about 70 yards out and I fell through and kept breaking ice for about 20 feet and finally got up on ice and then my friend called 911, police and fireman showed up and got me to shore. Had a ambulance ride and a ER trip. Never been so cold in my life. I learned my lesson the hard way and I know it could of been a lot worse. Hope nobody else has to endure what I did today. Happy to still be here

Glad you're here to make this post. A good reminder of just how fast ice
Conditions can change - especially in April!

I understand your desire to retrieve your gear.

For the next person this happens to, remember to try to locate a small jon boat
And a spud before venturing out on a gear rescue mission.  I probably wouldn't
Abandon my  gear either but I would do everything I could to reduce the risk of
a swim.

Again, glad you made it off Lucky!

I have a small jon boat and I am going tomorrow with a few friends to go and attempt to retrieve the gear. Not getting out of the boat at all tho. Half the trip is all broken up ice since all the firefighters and myself broke through it all.

Just use a spud or 2 to propel the boat after paddles become useless.

Glad you're OK Johnny. I watched ice disappear on a couple of lakes in just a few hours today, I won't be surprised to hear other stories like yours.

Yeah-I saw you on the news!-Falling through the ice is no joke-I should know- took a dive in late January on a pond solo- used a toboggan, long rope+ a buddy on shore w/ a phone to retrieve the gear-I think you should use an inflatable raft+a rope: it's more stable than a hard boat when transitioning onto break ice- send it off to get your gear- stay in the raft+ you'll be good-I hope you get your stuff back in good shape-I'm glad to see you lived to learn from this day- even burr was breaking up fast at the edges yesterday w/ the april sun+rain-I'm done for this year+ look forward to more fishing opportunity.

Great to hear you are safe. This time of year scares me.

I packed my gear away yesterday, time to get the boats ready.

you fell through 5-6 times on your way BACK to shore and actually made it to shore. THEN YOU ATTEMPTED TO GO BACK OUT TO RETIEVE YOUR GEAR????
look, I sympathize with you, but is the gear REALLY worth losing your life over? not very bright in my opinion.
After all is said and done, glad you're ok and are alive to tell about it.

Anyone know that lakes elevation?  Seem to be in the wrong part of the state for late ice. Glad you are ok! Think I'm calling it a season as well!

I retrieved most of my gear besides 6 tip ups. I used a flat bottom jon boat and skid right across the ice with the help of some ice chisels to push. I really just wanted to get my iPad since it has all personal information on it (credit cards, email etc) it was not smart to go out ther and I did get in trouble from the DEP for it for trespassing. And it's pretty amazing how much different the ice changed from where my gear was to where my truck was. I checked the ice by my gear and had 6-7 black ice and 3 of soft ice. It was 2 of black and 5 of soft back from where my truck was to 100 yards out.

Less ice by the shores. Shallower water warms quicker and melts faster leaving near shore unsafe. It's the opposite the beginning of the season. No ice is safe! Take ice chasers story for example, he fell thru in late January when that's the middle of the season.

I just saw on fb that someone went through in Bungee and wondered if it was one of us. Glad you got out okay.

Looks like the end of the season for me  :'( Wish I could've gotten out more but wasn't to be this year.

Wow buddy!!!! I'm glad your okay did u check the ice on the way out? I would of dig holes all the way out. Your a lucky guy. Hope you had health insurance. My big question is when you were digging holes according to the news report it was 2-3 inches of ice. Is that true? If so **censored** u doing out there!!!!!! Avian glad your safe!

I did drill holes all the way out til about 100 yards. And it was progressively getting thicker the farther you got out.  So thick that where I was fishing it was taking me 10-15 seconds to cut holes with brand new blades where all my tip ups were set up.

Johnnybasssss ....
Sorry to read about your experience....
Thank God you made it out okay........
You only have to go through, in March,
once to learn it does not pay to chance it....
The shore is easy to access with a plank, but,
you NEVER know what you are walking on beyond that...NEVER !!
I do not care how "thick" the ice is, in March, it is NEVER thick enough...
That sun is so strong, in March, that you risk everything
just to catch one more fish, sorry, not worth your life !!
Glad you are still part of our community, enjoy the soft water....
