Drove all over today looking for good ice.  Nobody up near the islands causway and zero folks on Shelburne Bay today.  I saw a bunch of places out in deeper water I could see water.

Heard that the gut is almost completely open! If it were as warm today as it was yesterday, then there may not be safe ice anywhere. Old holes are starting to open up wide.

They weren't on the ice, you could barely Walk on what's there.

Had a decent last outing yesterday, caught just over 30 pike yesterday and managed to get a nice batch of sunnies and perch too. Ice was ok but won't last long with this weeks forecasted temps. People were still driving on lapans with trucks which was a little surprising. Hopefully this ice goes quick so we can get the boats out soon. Good luck everyone and have a good summer.

I'm planning an ice fishing trip in about two weeks... fishing the icy water in a boat.  ::)
May the fish be with you.

I am hoping to launch my boat soon...

no not all i was over there today i didnt catch much though the water is very low . had one run on a salted smelt . i was fishing off the pier on the ny side. if the water warms up a little they will start biting as i saw several decent fish surface early this morning. its wide open all the way to the southern red can and above the northern red can.

Are bait rules not the same in NY as they are in VT? I didn't think smelt taken off the ice were legal to return.

My understanding is so long as the smelt came from there you can fish with em.

This comes from the VT Law Digest: "Personally harvested baitfish shall not be transported by motorized vehicle away from the waterbody from which they were collected."

So my understanding is that you cannot then return the baitfish to that waterbody, or any other waterbody for that matter.

It's interesting how the laws for fishing on Champlain are different for each state. I wouldn't have thought. So does that mean if you are on the VT side of the line you have to follow VT rules, but on the NY side you have to follow NY rules?

yes it does. but as far as the salted smelt goes i can use them anywhere on lake champlain i was told and just have to show the bait shops tag on the package. if i buy say fat heads from norm to use in champlain on the vermont side he will give me a transport receipt to cross the bridge . he pays the state of vermont each year to do that . many fisherman from vermont do business there and they use salted smelt also. there are several laws that differ from one side of the lake to the other which i wish the 2 states would get together and keep the same. its very confusing for me because i fish both sides and always have.

According to the VT book, our licenses are good on both sides (and in the middle  :)) of the lake, so I'd have assumed that the rules for Champlain were shared.
May the fish be with you.

Randy
