The look on your face says it all. Great catch, looked like a fun fight when he made that big run.

I hope the bowfin being caught on Monkton are being discarded on the ice or shore (hate to say such a thing).  I caught an 8 pounder there on a Senko bass fishing this summer.  It didn't make it back in the water.  Cant believe some moron thought it was a good idea to put them in there.

Amen brother!   Please, please make sure to discard any of these taken out of Monkton Pond.  In this case it is not waste but preservation of a great fishery.   Monkton Pond is only a couple hundred acres in size but great bass habitat.   The bowfin present there are NOT native and they have the potential to decimate the native fish.  If anyone knows who the culprit was please report them because this is a crime against the pond and all of us.

Cool video. It sure gave you a heck of a fight! Must've thought it was a 40 inch Northern!

I catch them a lot on the ice. Fish almost on the shoreline near reed beds. Dillonback has a ton.

Wicked!  Those things are monsters!  Caught a few on light tackle fishing crappie in the summer... never through the ice though.
I've seen them in the shallow swampy areas in the spring, and after they spawn the young swarm around them and they are really bizarrre looking.

Nice catch!
I've not got one jigging thru the ice yet, but since I just started using some tipups this season, I got one on a tipup a few weeks ago up at Campbell's bay. Thought it was another bass, since I had several LM on both tipups and jigging. Nothing nearly as big big as that girl though.

Jmaster, just wondering what your setup was? Were you targeting pike with big bait?

Have caught them in the fall in Charcoal Creek from a canoe, awesome fighters. Are they good eating?

I caught a big one few weeks ago at missisquoi in Campbell's bay while fishing for pike.
It was in 1-2 FOW.
I had a 9-10" perch on for bait.
They do fight like h#ll, I thought I had a big pike.
Went back down the hole.
My first through the ice.

Don't know if it's true or not, but I've heard they are some of the worst fish in the lake for storing chemicals in their flesh (mercury, etc).  A buddy of mine ate one a few years ago and said it wasn't too bad, but he had cooked it with plenty of cajun spices so he wouldn't have known what he was eating anyway!

Never ate one myself(yet), but the folks on the link seem to like them. If you check out the science section and scroll down to the article about mercury, there is another link that will show a national study that has Bowfin listed as having the highest level of mercury of any fish on the list. Seems as if there is a legitimate reason for concern.

Great pic!  Cool markings on the tail.   They love cut bait in the summer suspended from a bob just above the weeds.  They love the really thick weedy areas.  Got to have a steel leader and I prefer a treble hook rather than a single hook.  I land more on the treble.

Heavy metals in those bad boys head and shoulders. No wonder they are such tough fighters. Thanks Felix

I was targeting trophy pike with jumbo shiners and perch. This one took it on a shiner in 3 fow!

6 inch steal leader to a treble hook with a spinner spoon. Swallowed the hole leader!

They say if you want to eat them cook it on a plank of wood, when its done cooking take the fish throw it out and eat the plank...
