Did you get the weight or length? I used to target them in the summer as a kid. Biggest one I ever got was 12lbs. It's crazy how they can knock down cattails on a dead sprint to get away. Creepy *****s too. Had a few turn back on us after release. We used to lip them with leather gloves on, and they could bite down pretty hard. They certainly are fun to catch.

my jaw spreaders could do nothing with this bad girl! I wasn't putting my hand close to that mouth!

I was in a rush to get a proper weight. I was a bit worried for the fish as it swallowed the treble hook. I cut off as much leader as i could but the treble was still in its throat... I felt bad but thought it would be best to cut and hopefully it will pass the hook...

I managed to weight it quick but my scale read 12.3... I don't think that's accurate but it sure felt like 50 pounds when i picked her up :)

Nice video and great Bowfin.....I catch them quite often in the summer and they always put up an epic battle. I had my first experience with one about ten years ago. I had a few dandy perch on a old school fish chain hanging over the side of my boat. We were in shallow water in the evening bass fishing and started hearing this noise.....like fingernails scraping down a chalkboard. Suddenly the fish chain went tight and this huge bowfin broke it off the boat...ever since then I love catching them.
My Biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it.

Tight lines and be safe.

Not sure but it was still the biggest one Ive ever seen. They seem to be very territorial. Ive had them come right up to my boat and bump my little Johnson outboard. It scared my son enough that he didnt swim in the lake for a couple weeks.. LOL

I targeted them on flies last summer and it was amazing. They're not scared of much at times. I've pretty much waded over to one and it just sat there staring up at me like I was going to pet it. Wiggled a fly in front of it and it didn't hesitate to inhale it.  Haven't caught one through the ice yet though!

Great video and congratulations.  And a big one too!  Also good on ya for the release.   They are a great fighting fish and make fishing the bays in the big lake fun.  I got a smaller one at the mouth of the Otter last spring while walleye fishing.  It surprised the #*%! out of me!  Man can they bend a rod.  Unfortunately some fool caught some in the Champlain and released a few into Monkton Pond a couple years ago and apparently they are breeding because folks still occasionally catch them in the summer.    They'll decimate a small ponds native population so they definitely don't go back in when we are lucky enough to remove one from the pond.  It baffles me why someone would intentionally put an invasive species that is a voracious predator like a bowfin into one of the best small bass ponds in the region?

About 3 yrs ago I got one on a jig pole at monk ton pond. It was only 6 ft deep and I was hittin a few perch when all of a sudden my pole bent over and the drag started singin! I thought it must be a pike, after a good fight this thing popped up through the hole and was floppin around inside my pop up knockin everything over! I had never seen one before and didn't know they were in monk ton so I wasn't even sure what it was at first. Lots of fight to those fish! It flopped around inside my shanty so hard that I had trouble gettin ahold of it to unhook! Never caught one since... Awesome fish Jmaster and great reaction when you didn't know what it was, great fight!

I hope the bowfin being caught on Monkton are being discarded on the ice or shore (hate to say such a thing).  I caught an 8 pounder there on a Senko bass fishing this summer.  It didn't make it back in the water.  Cant believe some moron thought it was a good idea to put them in there.

i fish bowfins all summer along with catfish and they are ferocious to say the least. one of the best fighters in the lake. i have had them under and around the boat and just stare at you . awsome fish and i catch them in 1 to 4 foot of water in heavy cover. my wife last summer caught 2 on the same pole on one bait. she was exhausted after having 2 on one rod. ill try and post a pic.
