Fishing with my dog…the best!
« on: Mar 29, 2015, 04:15 PM »
Hi all,

me and the pup headed down the ice road for some C&R relaxation.

I've said it before and say it again, what an awesome friend he is, never complains, always happy to see you,

Never lies to you or plays mind games, won't steal from you, talk behind your back,

Not a mean atom in his handsome brown body, all he asks is to sleep at my feet at the end of the bed,

Two bowls of kibble a day, big hugs and games of tug 'o' war, some water,

Sticks thrown in the lake, and not to be shouted at too loudly when harassing the cats!

If this was Facebook it would be one of those "share if you love your dog" posts.

agreed!  fishing with your dog is a great time for all.

i'll add this story as a word of caution:
took my dog to a back lake this summer.  it was -2 or so and my dog was completely content - playing fetch and enjoying the snow.
but then he went to fetch and didn't come back with the ball.  i called a few times and still he didn't return.
so i walk over to find him licking is leg and a big pool of bloody snow around him.
turns out he stepped on the auger blade while he was running for his ball.  i had carelessly left it lying uncovered in the snow.
the blade was covered in his skin and hair.
he lost about 4" of skin and half his dew paw.  his leg muscles were completely exposed.  fortunately he didn't cut a tendon.
i bandaged it with strips of cloth i cut from a blanket and he stoically hiked out of the lake on three legs.
it's been 3 weeks since (+$200 in antibiotics/painkillers and $100 for vet check-up) and he has just about completely healed.

i learned a valuable lesson:
keep your auger guard on at all times, or drill it into the snow/ice.
be prepared for dog emergencies (i carry a first aid kit that includes vet-wrap when i take my dog camping.  it is great stuff)
