Crappie baits?
« on: Mar 26, 2015, 12:11 PM »
Just wondering what your favorite rigs to put crappie on the ice are? Recently caught wind that the bite was on in Champlain, and I would love to land a couple crappies. Thinking of heading out on Saturday, so any information would be helpful. Thanks.

This is a white perch board only, sorry.

Paint some crappie designs on the side of the whites and wallah - crappie.  I've caught crappie on tiny tungstens tipped with spikes but I hear a lot of guys use plastics for them.

Anyone use perch bait to catch them? Thinking of switching to live bait once the sun goes down. Would this work?

fatheads and small perch bait work well, sometimes they like it better under a float that has just enough wieght to keep it from sinking.I usually use a bright little jig to hook the minnow to.Sometimes will use a wedgie to enhance the whole rig.

Rockers/demons tipped with spikes. I use Wolframs (4mm) on real windy days.

I have a 1/64 ounce Clam Drop jig in a bluegill pattern. I was thinking of just tipping this with a polli and a spike or two. Is that the kind of thing you were talking about?

Yes, they look a lot like Wolframs. I generally add 3-5 spikes. They tend to fan out better. I have never used shad minnows under the ice; but that's my go to rig on the water. I like Lakefork; but they do not hold up anywhere near as good as Bobby Garland. LFT's often break the joints.

I hadn't heard of Lakefork or Bobby Garland, but those are great looking soft baits!  We'll have to get some.

Do they bite this through the ice?  I know that rig works great in summer and spring, but most of the advice I get (and read) says "go small" for the hardwater.   Of course, I haven't really put it to the test.

BUT the last couple days I twice caught unexpected crappie on my deep-water perch rig:  a hali/spike underneath a tungsten/maki.  I was walking back from deep water and passing through the bluegill/crappie area and I dropped it in a hole for the heck of it, and got a big crappie on the hali!  Not what I expected at all.

Today I did very well on a 1/16 oz pink/glo tungsten Clam jig with pink Maki Pro.  Then a big crappie broke my line -- for the second time today because I was trying to horse them in from right under the ice.  Switched to the same jig in white glow, and as I was out of pink Maki Pro I switched to glow Maki Pro.  Continued to catch them.

Long story short:  I really like the Maki Pro.  It kind of swims forward when you work it just right.

Going small for winter crappie was always my school of thought until yesterday. I was fishing sunfish using my normal small rockers and 4mm wolframs. Occasionally I would pick up a crappie on my slow drop down.
Two guys next to me were targeting crappie and doing well. One guy came by to show what he was using. It was an inch long willow blade. I swapped to one and caught some of the largest crappie I ever got through ice. Largest was 1lb 10oz.
I would have never thought!

Guys are catching white crappie in southern Champlain on some big lures!

Black crappie I caught on the hali was 2.2 lbs!
