Just out of curiosity, why do you think the fish has any cutthroat DNA?  It looks like a Rainbow Trout to me.

Cutbow trout identification

The "cut-bow" is a genetic cross between a rainbow and a cutthroat trout.  They can exhibit
a wide range of characteristics.  When identifying a hybrid look for the characteristics of a
rainbow but with the red-orange color slash (visible above) below the trout's jaw.  This is
the tell-tale characteristic of a cutthroat trout that usually shows through in a hybrid.

Many wild rainbow that have not had a cutthroat anywhere near them for decades will have faint cut stripes.

So how do you identify a cut bow ?

Wyoming_Ice:

The most positive way would be DNA analysis, but that is not possible or practical when out fishing.

So, if the rainbow looking fish you catch has white tipped anal and pelvic fins; and white leading edges on the pelvic fins it is a rainbow, throat slashes or not.

Beautiful fish. I caught a couple that looked just like that in the derby :) . Nothing better than those dark hook jawed males.

For what it's worth almost ALL of those big, dark, males will possess the orange under the jaw. I don't know if it is just further coloration when they're that dark or what. Doesn't really matter.....as it is a beautiful fish none the less.

If it has the orange slashes under its jaw then its a cutbow.  Its just that simple.

SLAYERFISH:

I hate to tell you but it is not that simple; what you say is just not true.  I have seen many rainbow that have never been any where near a cutthroat and they have red/orange slashes under the jaw.  Most are wild rainbows in streams that have not been stocked with any trout in decades and there are no cutthroats for a hundred miles.

What makes you think all rainbow looking fish with red/orange slashes are cutbows?

Because thats what I read somewhere.  True rainbows have no slash.  It might be as little as 1% cutty, but its still a cuttbow. IMHO.

From Wikipedia:
In the 1880s, rainbow trout were stocked in a number of different waters that had cutthroat trout in them. Shortly after, cutbows were prominent in these waters. Cutbow fish are created when the female cutthroat trout's eggs are fertilized by a bigger male rainbow trout. Many fishermen get the cutbow confused with rainbow and cutthroat trout. The cutbow has red or orange slash markings under the jaw and a silver body. Though most cutbow have dots on their bodies, patterns vary between each fish.[2]

Will someone please turn out the lights when you leave ? thank you.

Legend:

Before I hit that switch and turn out the light I would like to shed a little of that light on this cutbow discussion.

I grabbed my copy of Trout and Salmon of North America by Robert J. Behnke off the bookshelf.  If you do not know who Dr. Behnke is, or was I should say as he passed a couple years ago, he was a long time professor of Fisheries and Conservation in the Department of Fishery and Wildlife Biology at Colorado State University.  He authored more than 100 articles and papers and wrote the column “About Trout” for Trout Unlimited’s Trout Magazine.  He was regarded as the expert on cutthroat trout in North America.

In Trout and Salmon of North America Dr. Behnke describes several subspecies of genetically pure rainbow trout that have “cutthroat marks”.  On page 139 there is this, “In cutthroat trout the cutthroat mark beneath the jaws is an intense color and is typically bright red, whereas in rainbow trout populations that exhibit a cutthroat mark, such as some redband trout, it is a more subdued yellow or orange.”

So, do cutbows exist, absolutely they do.  Is every rainbow looking fish with cutthroat marks a cutbow, ABSOLUTELY NOT!!

I hope I am the last one out the door so I am going to turn out the light.
