« on: Mar 09, 2015, 09:12 AM »
Can someone id this?  Is it a standard Gill? Redear?  My Personal best either way!  Oh by the way, it's still swimming!  Felt good to release that tank!

Congrats on the big gill, bean counter.

Just to clear up any doubt:

Blue gill (Lepomis macrochirus) :

Redear sunfish (Lepomis microlophus) :

Mr. Gills-only, from your statement, you are the end-all, know-it-all, A1 expert in Taxonomy.

With that in mind, please enjoy a search, using the botanical names I gave you to work with.    ;)2

I see no need for you to apologize for your misstatement.

Please use caution in handling you crown of knowledge ~  lest the jewels loosen and escape your capture.

Thanks for your input.

Sir, check the links above to your very own Michigan State DNR.

What's the chance they don't know a bluegill from a redear sunfish ?       :roflmao:

Based on pictures in a North American Fishing Club "Understanding Freshwater Gamefish" it looks more like a Bluegill than a Redear.

just did a little looking around on the net. I found an identifier with a picture of a hybrid sunfish that is a cross between a bluegill and a green sunfish that are stocked by hatcheries. Bigger than gills, smaller mouth than the green sunfish, no vertical stripes like on the gills. Looks just like that. Is that body of water stocked?

it is stocked - the hybrids were put in a few years ago.  I guess that answers my question!

thanks all!
