3 Die Ice fishing!
« on: Mar 08, 2015, 02:14 PM »
Three older guys went in yesterday north of Creston on a pond. The ice will be turning bad very very fast this week so be careful and wear a life jacket. Wish the family prayers they can make it through this tragedy. Most ponds and lakes south of 30 should be open soon or very unsafe.

That's sad to hear, thoughts to the families.  It's crazy to think how the ice can be so bad just a little bit away as we're sitting on over a foot and a half in the NE Part.  Be safe out there!

No vehicles.  The owner of the pond said there is a drain culvert dumping into the pond.  Need to pay attention to pond intakes, edges, and the ice lifting from the increase of the water levels due to run off.  Had a couple buddies out yesterday afternoon in Central Iowa and they had to step across the edges, but were ok once out there.  Ice it soft and looks terrible, doubt there will be any central IA fishing by the weekend.

First and foremost, my condolences go out to the families and friends of these men. That's right there was no vehicles on the ice! The farmer/owner (last fall) had recently tiled in a drainage to his pond that these gentlemen were unaware of. The recent warm up led to a lot of runoff off from the field through the drain tile and into the pond further exacerbating the deteriorating ice conditions!

This area has had a rough past couple years. Last year, 2 young brothers drowned after falling through the ice.
