I visited the Burbot Factory for the first time…..
« on: Mar 08, 2015, 08:14 AM »
This morning, I was suppose to take my Grandson out to catch his 5th Master Angler perch so he could attain his first Specialist Badge but he fell ill with the flu. After enduring a sleepless 2 days, I decided to forego the trip myself and get some much needed rest. Drilling multiple 10 inch holes in 4 feet of ice can be tiring for an old guy like me  ;D

Friday night, I left the house at 8:30pm and picked up my friend at 9pm. Arrived at our destination at midnight. The winds were howling and it made setting up the 6 man tent a chore working in the dark. Together on the Jiffy, we drilled 4 holes. The ice is so thick that it took almost all of the extra 18 inch extension I put on the flyte. Lines in the water by 1am. Right away, our flashers lit up like xmas trees. Lots of small suspended fish that we suspected were baitfish. We were targeting the BIG marks we hoped to see near the bottom at 22 fow. It didn't take long for the first of many burbot to be landed. The action was sporadic but we stayed awake and fished hard. Only 1 burbot was too small to keep. The biggest we landed was 25 inches. Most of them were all the same size with fat bellies and thick backstraps  ;D
By morning, the tent was dripping badly as we had 2 propane heaters going all night. Went outside to a wonderful windless sunny morning. It was then that I finally got to see the surrounding area and wouldn't you know it, we were set up between 2 long lines of commercial nets on both sides of our location  ::)  ::)  ::)  >:(
I can't imagine how many more fish we would have landed if the nets weren't there  :icefish:
Anyways, it was an adventure and one I'm glad I finally did as it was planned for a few years. Next time, I plan to sleep all day before doing that torture test again  ;D

Way to go guys....... they are SO MUCH FUN to catch! I followed Mikey's advice a few years back and pulled an all nighter up on the Saskatchewan River/Grand Rapids.... what a blast...... have been heading back year after year, multiple times.... but mostly up top on Cedar Bay now! Those look like real nice eater size..... "lobster" meal on the way? Congrats again!

Nice catch , and a all nighter to boot ? Only caught one ever myself ....I believe it was 32 inch's ? was told it was a master , but not into that , ended up giving it to a friend who grew up in the Interlake area who was used to them .Kinda grossed me out to be honest ,wrapped around my arm ! Used to see them littering the ice a few years back , glad to see that they are being eaten instead of just being tossed
Enjoy The Ride ,You only Get One Chance

That's some hardcore fishing!   My son caught a 26" fatty on Lake Winnipeg last week.  They are a neat fish, congrats on your catch.

Way to go blue Igloo and friend. I see those long hours payed off, nice haul of burbot.
Those are some good eating fish right there. ;)

Interesting to see that even the burbot from that area also have a different coloration than the others I have seen or caught.
Ours are generally alot darker with more yellow or greenish yellow markings.
