Spring just before they spawn. Just ask the guys what they're fishing for on the Rainy River, LOTWs just after ice off.

Yup, late winter, early spring. Full off eggs. Pre- spawn is when most fish are heaviest I believe

I knew I couldn't be the only one. I agree the females get awfully plump this time of year, but all of the males I've caught recently have been pretty skinny. Everything we caught before ice up were just slobs!
