i travel 165 miles each way to fish for them in the summer not many places to get them in se ny

get a lot of  them in the  lake  Ontario  tribs  and  the  river  system  ......  I've  watched  them in the  backwashes  when i'd  be  spearing  bullheads ....  the  are  one  heck of a  predator ....

sorta like sheephead everyone considers them a  trash fish yet they are great fighters

sheepshead aka fresh water drum are a good eating fish when still under 5 pounds close to walleye but bowfins are better but you have to keep them cold untill you clean them

they are very good really mild flavor not fishy at all but the fillet is slippery not slimy but hard to hold just keep them on ice or better yet alive untill you are ready to clean them also there is a forum just for them bowfin anglers group i have a few picts on there as well as gar picts

green   use to  spear  mexico pt little salmon river,sage creek lakeview  all on the  shore of lake Ontario ...... I ate a lot of  sheephead growing up ,use  to get a lot of them on crabs fun fish  to catch,i don't  remember ever eating a  bowfin so I have  to take your word for it.

the sheepheads are now in the hudson river by me they are another fun fish bait or lures they hit avery thing i do a good amount of fishing on champlain for gar to

Nice bowfin ive never eaten one either and probably wont i have eaten sheep head but not so much any more.both fish are great fighters.but eating either one now ill pass

Make a European mount of his head.  When you see all of the plates the plates that make up his skull you will see what I mean.  Their skull is different than other fish.  Its prehistoric  ;)

if you go to the outdoor show in suffern this weekend the dec usually has a snake head and a bowfin in a fish tank to show the difference  i caught that bowfin in champlain for chris bowser who works for the dec
