i live on the willimantic in tolland. it still has several inches of ice. they usually start stocking middle of march. they are not stocking anything soon. if the rivers are ice free by opening day its going to be  tough fishing. can you imagine opening day on the ice? i'm sure some of the ponds in the n.w. will still be frozen. i'm usually flyfishing the tma by now.

Rivers, streams,Brooks you will not have a problem with, they will be the first to ice out, Some lakes and ponds at this rate will be a problem

Just hit the ice in Eastern CT today for my last time out this year. :'(   There was 13" of ice. It was not as sloppy as I thought it would be. Definitely some slushy spots and the edges are starting to soften up. You also have to be careful for older holes on the ice that are not to froze up now..... don't want to step in one and get a wet leg. I think the ice will go quickly if these temperatures continue. It was interesting to watch the sun rise in the fog this morning.

I fished last year in shorts, sneakers, and a tee shirt on 3/27 in 55 degree weather on 5 " but sloppy at the edges. should be later than that this year.

I don't want to beat this to boredom, but I am watching the precipiation at least as much as, if not more than the temps.

Air is a poor conductor of heat (helps us keep the ice), but water is a good conductor of heat (will start to open up the edges).

So if you're looking ahead minimal rain is the key to ice fishing this month.  ;D

I went to Camp Nahaco to fish Crystal Pond (Eastford) today. It's was like there was a second lake of 3"+ on top of packed snow and a foot of ice. It was pretty miserable, slush kept running into the holes so was impossible to clear them. Feet got soaked, knees soaked, hand towel I usually use to wipe my hands got soaked.

But I had some okay fishing, two eating sized perch and a bluegill.

Then it started getting cold and what got wet wanted to freeze so I got out of there. Not sure if I'll get back there before ice out. Probably not so sloppy if I got there in the morning before things started melting in earnest.

Checked my local lake today and the shoreline in one area looks like it thinned out quite a bit. I took a few steps out and had some cracking. I should be able to gain access in some other more shaded spots but this rain over the weekend may not help.

I wound up sleeping in and not getting out there, my boots were still a little damp when I got up so just as well I guess but I hate to miss a trip this late in the season. Gonna be busy most of tomorrow... Hoping to get out this weekend and if it rains it won't ruin my trip.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a soaker. Is Sunday the day we will need a board or do you think the edges will handle it?

yeah that was me. been wanting to go over there for a while. I got a couple decent perch and a nice gill. oh yeah and about 15 rainbows. all around 14". would have been ok if one was a 16" but oh well. found a hole full of small blue gill/ sunfish.  the walk was super easy on the way out. even on the way back it wasn't too bad. got a little slushy. one thing that did interest me was I reopened a hole in the direct middle of the lake. dropped a spoon with a minnow head on it down and a big mark came right up on it, then disappeared. that would have made my season if it was" you know who" and wanted to take a breath of fresh air..........how did you make out?

one rainbow an inch shy of 16 few gills small perch.
Couldn't find any of those big browns.

Planning one more trip this year, within  the next few days
everyplace ive gone has 6-8 inches of good black ice under the slush   so i figured im good to go
though  im going to need to find a way to keep my feet dry from walking through the slush,
anything after this week i think il bring my kayak as a sled that il stay on
now the only question is how do i move it while in it

This cold snap will tighten things up a bit, We will be loosing ice from now on. Next weeks cold temps will slow the melt, Southern ponds and lakes will go first moving north until it gets to the northwest corner more than likely the first week in April. No matter what anyone says Its late ice season be very carefull, things can change very quickly

Checked my local lake and it looks like it the edges in some spots that get more direct sun are done. Other areas that are shaded are still solid. I didn't get to drill any holes, but I was pleasantly surprised with what I saw.

As the sun passes over the equator this Friday, the sun has the same intensity as in September. Even with temps below freezing ice will still melt from the suns radiant power. Fridays snow will help keep ice but only for two days, once it melts. It will not reflect the suns rays, our ground cover is almost gone.once this happens temps will rise quickly during the day

Newguy-

Out on the St Clair river in MI I watched kayakers go through an ice field using two ice picks, one in each hand. Just pulled thems elves across it looked effortless but I imagine those things are pricey.

Makes sense. You can definitely see that regarding the snow pack. Anything that gets afternoon sun has melted but some areas of the yard that get little sun still have around a foot.
