Hunt's NY Ice
« on: Feb 28, 2015, 04:47 PM »
So I haven't been on the ice since the last weekend in January when I went to Canada, both weather, work and family has kept me from being able to go.  I decided to try something I have wanted to do for a few years now.  I went to chase some Lakers.   What an awesome day!  It was -12 and wind in the face on the walk out...it was COLD on the eyes and face.  Set up in a spot I had pre-marked on my Navionics map prior to going.  When I got near the spot there was a Lake Trout frozen in the middle of the 12"s of Black Ice...it was a sign.  I set up right there and fish hit on the first drop.  I wasn't even ready, I have never used my Vexilar FL20 in 165 FOW before.  It worked awesome by the way.  I caught fish from 30' down to bottom in 165'.  Some of them were line stripping runners.  What a blast!  The fish were aggressive and steady throughout the morning.  It let up around 1130-1200 and then a small flurry before I called it a day at 2:00.  I ended up landing 11 fish, the largest was my first fish which was just a sliver under 29"...a slob, it was -12 so my attempt to get a picture was a bust...Stinks.  I caught a bunch more ranging 22-25" range and a couple under 20".  I kept two 17" fish to try on the smoker.  I lost two at the hole and one more somewhere on the way up.  Definitely in my top 5 for ice trips ever.  A few pics...

So I have made few Crappie trips this year, I haven't taken many pictures...last night the conditions were beautiful, took a buddy of mine and his two sons...we had about a two hour window of good action.  Both kids caught fish.  We finished with 17 keepers, lost a few and put some shorts back...

Those are just the reflectors built into the flip over...they reflect from the flash of my camera...

Thanks everyone...it was a great evening!  I cleaned all the fish and had to label the vacuum seal bag with the kids name on it for a future fish fry...they didn't want to part with the fish...LOL

They reflect very well , I could've sworn they were lights lol.
