otsego lake fishing

Anybody catch any good fish out of otsego yet this year? Any browns or salmon at all?
Ive ben out about a dozen times all i have managed is a bunch of starving lake trout.

Has anyone heard about the Whitefish or "Otsego Bass" stocking program that SUNY has been doing? My dad said he read an article in a local newspaper in Delhi but was unsure which.

I have not heard about any stocking program, but it is reported that they are coming back. I know of a few that have been caught in the last couple years. The folks at the Biological Field Station have told me that quite a few have been taken in their surveys, and they attribute it to the decline in the alewives which supposedly decimated the whitefish eggs/spawn.

Thanks bigjim.    I found the article by googling Otsego Bass and daily star. Basically it's a cooperative between SUNY Cobleskill, DEC and the Field station. They are netting adult Whitefish, collecting the eggs and milt then rearing them to various sizes at SUNY. At which time they will be reintroduced to Otsego.

They are very tasty. Kept a 7lb a few years back.

They're excellent to eat. White meat like a walleye, and just a little oily like a trout or salmon.
