I spend 8 hours one day in this one part of the lake caught 2 pike, next day spent 9 and got 0 pike...... This week spent 8 hours and got 1 pike. I feel like the hours I'm putting in I should be producing more pike than that. I know they are in there in mass quantities. I'm fishing shallower water wondering if I should go deep. My bait selection is shiners from 3"-6". Mostly caught fish on the 6" shiners

Don't use steel leader 20 lb fluorocarbon or 50 lb suffix 832 brait size 6 mustard trebel hook red with a split shop appropriate to size of bait about 12 to 18 inches above hook

Clear mono leader is definetly the way to go. You will catch a lot more fish.

Monofilament or Fluorocarbon are both great choices for leaders for pike. You may break a couple off, but will probably catch a lot more fish.

How far off the bottom are you putting your bait, and are you using any dead bait? At this time of year, pike will begin moving into shallower spawning flats, and may be very well looking for an easy meal. It's not hard to get your hands on some dead/ frozen smelt, mackerel, trout, etc, throw that on a quick strike rig, and you have yourself a nice recipe for a big fish.

Further, you will want to set your baits at a variety of points in the water column.  pike's eyes are on top of their heads, and they tend to see better upwards, and chase bait up. I've caught pike a foot off the bottom all the way to just under the ice, although the later was in four feet of water. Utilize your allotted number of rigs, spread them out to a variety of depths, try one closer to the ice, a few near the middle of the water column, and one closer to the bottom, and figure out where most of your bites are coming from.

I'm fishing at Penn Warner lake. If I'm in 9FOW my large shiner is 5FT under ice. 6 feet of water bait is 3FT under ice. 12 FOW bait is 6FT under ice. I'm fishing a big cove with a bunch of different water depths drop offs humps weeds. I'm using black and silver steel leaders with a small split shot 16" above my hook. I try for shiners as big as possible but at $2.50 a piece im settling for dollar a piece minnows.

The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard.
