Stripers/hybrids through the ice??
« on: Feb 23, 2015, 08:55 AM »
Anyone ever have any luck going after stripers or hybrids through the ice?  At Lake Arthur hybrids are a big thing in the spring/summer but I haven't seen any reports of them being caught through the ice.

Never really targeted them. But I have been fishing Arthur over 20 years and only caught one.I'm guessing by accident, had a 8 inch sucker suspended about 6' off the bottom off the mcdanels launch. I did hear rumors of guys catching them in large numbers this winter somewhere in the main lake. Would definitely like to get into another one though, they still fight like crazy in the winter.

Ya, I know there are a decent number of them in LA.  I guess I'm surprised that with a decent number of ice anglers on the lake that there aren't more reports of them being caught.  It seems like the other bass species get caught frequently through the ice, but not the hybrids?  I imagine they still feed during the winter months.

they do, just not as heavily. They are still chasing the schools of herring over the winter. Find the herring (get lucky) and they will likely be nearby.

He's talking about the Alewives which are in LA.  They are a type of Herring (similar to Blueback Herring).  I had limited luck catching them with a cast late may.  Didn't have any luck using them for Striper bait though.  They are the reason the PFBC gives as to why predator fish are tough to catch in LA.  They are well fed by the large schools of Alewives.

I know a group of guys that been pounding them on LA. They caught over 70 one day and that's no joke. I'm not gonna say wer cause it will be ruined just like everything else ends up on that lake.

It wasn't specific to Lake Authur. Any lake in PA that was stocked with stripers/ wipers is going to have alewives which depending on where in the state you're fishing will either be called shad, herring, alewives or any of a few other different names.

Does the water above McConnell's mills freeze? I caught a 23 1/2" striper in the deep hole just above, while trout fishing once. My cousin also got one, 17". We broke off a bunch on our 4lb line and Shakespeare combos  ;D

Lmao..how ya been john?

Only stripers I ever saw on the ice was early 80's at Raystown Lake. Ran into a few guys who knew where they were and when.

Great pics!! Every winters different. It could be years before they come through there feeding like that again. Did anyone see any caught on tip-ups? All I saw and all I was told by others were caught jigging. I know 1mofish is a tipup guy. I should have asked him yesterday but forgot.
