Author Topic: Congrats to deadsmelthead on his 1st place pike! (Pics ) (Read 1880 times)

Yesterday morning, DSH and I met up to fish the Lee Center Rod & Gun club derby. First off, let me say that anyone who fished it aught to be proud of themselves for sticking with it through brutal conditions of snow and slush. The hike out to the area we wanted to fish was not easy. Snow up to mid thigh in spots with the nice layer of slush underneath. Prior to even drilling a hole was an adventure in itself.
Once we got to our destination and took a quick break, we set up. Right away DSH noticed we had an odd north wind, and I wasn't really confident in a good bite. We finally got all our lines in the water and hoped for the best. The weather didn't seem to effect the pickerel as they seemed to want rather large meals.
Lunch time came around, and other than a few pick flags, there were no signs of what we were after. Knowing our location was good, we crossed our fingers for the last two hours of fishing time.
It was 1:15, and DSH favorite tip up flag popped. I had a good feeling with this one! We grabbed everything we needed and trecked through the snow to the trap. When I got there, DSH had just set the hook, and he knew right away it was a pike. Once it made it's first good run he told me it was a good fish. And that it was. As soon as I saw the head I knew it had good potential to win it. It was a blast to watch the fight and to assist and successfully ice this fish.
While DSH ran around getting what he needed to bring the fish in to the measuring station, I removed the hooks and measured the fish. It measured 39" even and was just shy of 16lbs. To say getting this fish into the measuring station was a chore is an understatement. Thanks to Rudy, who was fishing near us, for giving DSH a ride on his sled! Long story short, the fish released very well and it could not have gone better.
Congratulations to DSH on the nicest pike I've seen in person this year, for the win in the pike category, and for the awesome sight of this fish swimming away!

Ive got a video that is from my POV oposite of FishNY's camera, its pretty cool to see both angles...

that said.. looks like FishNY left out the clips of him going a$$ over tea kettle after the fish was caught

.. Wish i had my camera running for that one.. We were in kind of a scramble, i wanted to get the pics for the tourney here on Ice shanty, and get the fish in to the weigh station as quick as possible.. While i was retreiving the tourney card and tape measure FishNY was removing the hook etc etc, and i saw him out of the corner of my eye doing what looked like some form of break dancing

.. Good thing is there was plenty of snow to break his fall !!!

Ok ok ok. I guess I'll add the fishing blooper of the day. As you can see at the end, my camera was on top of a bait bucket. Another reason to always buy a water proof product!
