What pound test?
« on: Jan 13, 2006, 01:37 PM »
I am really new to walleye fishing.  i was just wondering what pound test most of you put on your jigging rod.  I am going to be fishing where 10 lb fish are fairly common.  also are leaders of some sort usually a good idea?

6 or 8lb stren here also, no leader and there is a good chance (if we get ice!!!) for a 10lb+ fish.

6lb P-Line floroclear will pretty much handle any walleye that swims provided you have a good jig rod and a reel with a nice drag system.
I am also a fan of the P-Line. A few extra bucks with great satisfaction.

Six pound stren when using smaller spoons and small jigging raps. Ten pound fluoroclear when using #5 raps, and 12 pound fluoroclear when using #7 raps. The heavier line gives the larger raps better action. Using original stren and then connecting a fluoro leader with a double uni knot works well too. Just make sure you gently slide the knots together and lube them. Putting on a dab of super glue on the knots works well too.

Don't you find Vanish brittle? I use p - line fluoro leader and it's awesome.

Haven't noticed the brittleness yet....brought in walleyes as big as 6lbs, pike as big as 8lbs, as well as some hard fighting rainbows.  I'm using Vanish Transition....it isn't the most flexible line in cold temps, but no breakoffs yet aside from the teeth of a few small pike cutting the line.

Vanish Transition has to the worst line I've ever used.  It was total crap.

I run 4 pound maxima fluorocarbon on my walleye jigging rod.  It has plenty of strength for the eyes I am catching.  Do use vanish too but prefer the maxima.

4-8 lb vanish and 4-6# micro ice will handle anything. Never had a problem with any of them.
