Using a vexilar from a boat?
« on: Feb 21, 2015, 02:02 PM »
have a vexilar FL8 with a puck style transducer. It can be mounted in-hull or under water. I want to try to use it in my boat this year, mainly for depth readings and bottom content.

Has anyone had any experience operating a flasher in open water?

Have you mounted yours in-hull or outside the boat?

Which method seems to work better?

I don't know anything about puck transducers. But iceducers work great over the side of the boat.
Every plastics manufacturer claims plastics outfish livebait. So now I use livebait just for the increased challenge.

they do not know its open water or ice lol as long as you are not moving it should be fine the transducer is meant for fishing vertacle open water transducers are made for moving the signal goes fore ward a little but for open water ligging like i do for perch is no different than ice fishing

I have used my FL-8 from my kayak and my boat.  Seems to work OK when stationary, but is not ideal for any type of trolling.  I have read you can get a wider beam transducer that helps when using in open water.  They work for depth and showing structure, but in my experience, marking fish is not as reliable in open water vs. down an ice hole.

Like I said, mainly just gonna use it for depth readings anyway, not trolling or marking fish.

Thanks guys

When I had my FL-8 I got a 19 degree puck and put it on the bottom of my trolling motor worked great. I now have a FL-18 don't think I am going to use it for open water. Always wondered how that alumna-ducer worked.

I take my FL18 to MN in the summer- Really just check depths/mark fish when stopped in a rental boat- It helps!
There is a way to mount it & use it when moving (bottom lock setting) but I don't go to the trouble of doing that.
