« on: Jan 27, 2015, 07:26 PM »
Warning fellow Shanty members. I was walking cutting holes today at hopewell. My next step on what seemed like solid ice. I went through.Like i stepped on paper.  My whole right side went in & I rolled onto the more solid ice. shew. 10 min later another guy 30yds away went in also. PLEASE USE EXTREME CAUTION IF YOU GO THERE. Your next step might be your last. The capt.

Hopewell is alway a little warm than scotts of other lake in driving distance.  When we got first ice this year I drilled a hole at scotts ..5 inches went to hope well only 3 inches.. Be careful guys

Glad to hear the captn and the other fellow are ok. I haven't been out since this past Thursday, and had my doubts that local ice would hold up to be safely fish on, considering the rainy/snotty weather and recent warmup. Brianm14 is correct. Hopewell is never fishable before Scotts Run. Hopewell also has a tendency to warm up quicker than Scotts Run. It's even worse when there's a lot of snow melt. When there's no snow cover on the ice, more or less the way it is here, it'll absorb heat a lot quicker, after all it's a dark body. Hopewell is in the sun all day long, so it's absorbing that heat. Around here Scotts run and Antitem Lakes were always the first to freeze well enough to be safely fished on. I don't think there will be any problems with these lakes by this weekend, we are going to get some cold and friendly weather. Cold is a good thing. @) @)

Glad to hear you made it out. These things happen from time to time and all you can do is be prepared. Spud bar, ice picks, rope etc, you can never be too safe !
